Complete fire & security solutions protecting people, property, assets and data.
The world of fire and security technology is in a state of rapid evolution. At the forefront of this revolution is Scutum Group, striving to blend the worlds of fire safety and technology for optimal safety and user experience. We sat down with Scutum North’s Managing Director, Dave Whiteside, to discuss the latest advancements and understand how Scutum as an installer and other manufacturers are navigating these transformative times.
Integration and Transparency
Dave began by sharing the innovative approach of integrating fire safety, painting a vivid picture of the seamless app integration technology that Honeywell has developed. Speaking about a substantial order from a Motor car manufacturer in the UK, he explained:
"We have had a large order to install CLSS software, which provides access to the fire software to collect data on the site. Allowing us to connect to that network, via an app, we can interrogate the system so we can look at service records, where faults have been – and the customer can see all the same information. That information is always available in a panel, but it’s never been taken out of a panel into a portal or an app”.
Such advancements not only enhance efficiency but offer unprecedented transparency in an industry that, historically, relied heavily on engineers’ word of mouth. In Dave’s words, “Traditionally with the fire industry, a lot of the fire records are what the engineer says he’s done – but is not always accurate.” By tapping into the digital age, Scutum ensures precise analytics that refine processes and bolster safety measures.
Balancing Longevity with Technology
While discussing the lifespan of devices, Dave highlighted an industry-wide challenge: manufacturers often fail to commit to a specific lifespan for detectors. Addressing this, he stated,
"Scutum gets a lot of questions about the lifespan of a smoke detector. The manufacturers are committed to a change-out time of their product. So, when they are asked: how long do they expect the device to last, they would put a statement out saying that they were committed to 14 years the product would be at its peak. Some say, ‘well our product lasts longer than that’ but don’t commit to a timeframe. "
He also praised GENT's proactive approach by stating 14 years, although this is more like a ‘Best Before’ date and although still works after, begins to deteriorate. He also praised their software that detects devices nearing the end of their ideal operational timeframe, allowing businesses to plan replacements efficiently and safely.

Tech Advancements in the Security Sector
Comparing various sectors, Dave noted the technological advancements in CCTV and intruder alarms. “Most people nowadays have a CCTV camera at home that they can access via their phone on an app. The security market has been in the app world for quite a while now, and it seems that fire is a little behind.” But, he expressed optimism about fire safety catching up, especially with the innovations like those introduced by GENT.
Future Possibilities with Integrated Apps
One of the most intriguing aspects of our conversation revolved around the potential of app-based solutions. Dave recalled the transition at Scutum from traditional paper worksheets to the more efficient app-based engineer worksheet.
"We introduced an app-based engineers worksheet years ago. We brought NAV financial software into the business quite quickly and took out SAGE. We’ve kept the app-based paperwork out in the field. Because it’s a success."
On the topic of future integration, Dave revealed the direction Scutum is heading. “The next step is to link the fire alarm panel with the app so it can show you all the stats and actions in the report.” Such advancements, when realised, could offer immense benefits in analysing operational efficiencies.
The technological landscape of fire safety and security is undeniably transforming. With visionaries like Dave Whiteside and companies like Scutum Group UK leading the charge, the future promises greater efficiency, transparency, and safety. As we continue to witness these evolutions, the integration of technology with security will undoubtedly redefine the standards of protection for all.
