The Evolution of Executive Search

The Evolution of Executive Search

Never aim for your goal directly; always move in angles.

This defies human logic because we're always told to attack our goals head on.

But as a recruiter, if your goal is to 'make more money,' then your immediate goal shouldn't be to just try and make more money.

You'll score a quick deal or two but you'll always be stuck below an artificial threshold you set for yourself.

Remember the most important thing we do - helping leaders achieve their dreams through adding value (through talent).

If what you offer is the same thing every other recruiter you compete with offers, or if they can say the exact same thing you do:

?? I'm a ____ specialist!

?? I have ____ years experience!

?? I'm an authority in the ____ space!

?? I've worked with ____, ____, and ____, so work with me too!

Don't follow the crowd. There's a good chance they're running off a cliff anyway. Take a step back and retool what you have to offer.

Think... Is your product a commodity?

COMMODITY: A commodity is a basic good used in commerce that is interchangeable with other commodities of the same type. The quality of a given commodity may differ slightly, but it is essentially uniform across producers.

So step back and think to yourself: How do you take the commodity product of filling a role for ____% by submitting resumes until someone gets hired...

...and turn it into a premium product that no one in your niche offers, and cannot easily replicate?

(that's one reason why I've now blocked other recruiters from downloading The Blueprint)

So the lesson here is this, look at your business with new eyes, and think first before just making money...how can I creatively add value?

...and how can I tie that value to the personal desires of the decision-makers who matter, while helping them avoid pain?

And if you find this exercise is easy, then you're doing it wrong.

So...are you stuck at an artificial threshold year after year?

Brute-forcing your way past that threshold with more output will only give you diminishing returns.

Evolution never moves in straight lines like human logic does. Evolution creates perfect order from chaos, while human logic will create chaos from perfect order.

Evolution is an indirect thinker; it always moves in angles, and it's created the miracle of the human intellect.

So does Apple, Google, Facebook...

They create first. Think differently. make mistakes and iterate, over and over and over again.

One thing they don't do?

Brute force commodity products.

So the lesson here is...move in angles, create something spectacular, and shatter the barriers holding you back.
