The Evolution of Agentic AI and how it might disrupt Application Software market

What Triggered Me to Write This Blog on Agentic AI?

Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to engage with several Bay Area startups working on cutting-edge technology and Agentic AI products and platforms. Through these conversations, I’ve noticed a profound shift in how businesses are thinking about automation not just as a tool for efficiency but as a fundamental reimagination of software itself. While many of these startups are still in their early stages, their vision and ambition suggest a seismic transformation on the horizon. The way they talk about AI-driven autonomy, decision-making, and adaptability makes it clear that we’re on the cusp of a paradigm shift that could reshape the application software market as we know it.

What does this mean for traditional software? Could Agentic AI disrupt long-established application models and redefine how we interact with technology? These are the questions that inspired me to explore this topic in this blog, and I tried to dive into why this evolution matters and what it could mean for the future.

Agentic AI's autonomous agents capable of making decisions and executing tasks without human intervention, has the power to revolutionize industries by redefining traditional software applications. By automating complex workflows, integrating diverse systems, and delivering dynamic, context-aware solutions, these intelligent agents are set to drive major business transformations and industry disruptions. This marks a major advancement beyond traditional AI systems. Unlike conventional AI, which often relies on human intervention for decision making, Agentic AI operates independently, continuously learning from data and adapting to new inputs in real-time. This autonomy allows businesses to streamline complex processes, lower operational costs, and boost overall efficiency.

Significant Market opportunity

The market for Agentic AI is experiencing rapid growth. Valued at $5.1 billion in 2024, it is projected to reach $47.1 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 44.8%.? This surge indicates a robust trend toward the adoption of autonomous AI solutions across various sectors.

Impact on Software as a Service (SaaS) Applications

From my perspective, the rise of Agentic AI is set to challenge the traditional Software as a Service (SaaS) model in a profound way. SaaS applications have long relied on a static business logic layer to address specific needs, but I see Agentic AI fundamentally changing this landscape. With its dynamic and adaptive capabilities, Agentic AI can effectively replace this layer, making conventional SaaS solutions less competitive.

AI agents are capable of automating workflows, seamlessly integrating disparate systems, and delivering results without direct user intervention. This level of automation threatens to diminish the unique value propositions that many SaaS vendors currently offer. If businesses can achieve the same if not better outcomes through AI-driven solutions, traditional SaaS applications may struggle to maintain relevance.

Gartner’s forecast supports this shift, predicting that by 2028, 33% of enterprise software applications will incorporate Agentic AI, a sharp increase from less than 1% in 2024. This tells me that enterprises are steadily moving away from conventional application software and embracing more autonomous, AI-driven solutions. As I see it, this transformation will force SaaS vendors to rethink their strategies, either by embedding AI more deeply into their offerings or by finding new ways to differentiate themselves in an increasingly AI-dominated market.

Industry-Specific Disruptions

Several industries are poised to experience profound transformations due to the integration of Agentic AI:

  • Financial Services: Agentic AI is revolutionizing fraud detection, risk assessment, and portfolio management. By analyzing transaction patterns and market trends, these systems can identify anomalies and make investment recommendations with unparalleled accuracy. AI agents can monitor millions of transactions in real-time, flagging suspicious activities, and preventing fraud before it occurs.
  • Healthcare and Pharma: The healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors are witnessing a paradigm shift with Agentic AI. AI agents can assist in medical diagnostics, drug discovery, and patient management. In healthcare, AI-powered systems analyze medical imaging, detect anomalies, and provide decision support to doctors with high accuracy. In pharmaceuticals, AI accelerates drug discovery by analyzing vast datasets, identifying potential compounds, and optimizing clinical trial processes. Additionally, AI agents enhance hospital operations by automating administrative workflows, reducing wait times, and improving patient outcomes.
  • Manufacturing: In manufacturing, Agentic AI can optimize production lines, predict equipment failures, and enhance quality control. AI agents can monitor machinery in real-time, detect anomalies, and schedule maintenance before breakdowns occur, reducing downtime and increasing operational efficiency. Manufacturers leveraging AI are seeing significant improvements in productivity and cost savings.
  • Customer Service and Support: Agentic AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants can handle customer inquiries, resolve issues, and even upsell products without human intervention. For instance, AI agents can analyze customer sentiment in real-time, enabling businesses to tailor responses and improve overall customer experience.
  • Supply Chain and Logistics: In logistics, Agentic AI systems can predict demand, optimize routes, and manage inventory in real-time. Companies using AI in supply chains have seen a 20-30% reduction in costs and significant improvements in delivery times. For example, AI agents can dynamically reroute shipments based on weather conditions, traffic, or supplier delays, ensuring timely deliveries.
  • Marketing and Sales: Agentic AI can analyze customer behavior, predict trends, and automate personalized marketing campaigns. AI agents can segment audiences, create personalized content, and optimize ad spend in real-time, ensuring maximum return on investment for marketing campaigns.
