Surrounded by his men, he watched the black Lincoln MKX move up his driveway to the fa?ade of his home. A white van that seated 24 followed. The vehicles came to a stop then emptied seven men, each dressed in black tee shirts and slacks. They all wore sunglasses. Moe grunted. As his men hovered by his side, he said, “Search and disarm them.” He motioned for Alex and Johnny to approach. “But assure them they will collect their weapons upon the conclusion of our meeting.”
“Right.”
“Yes, boss.”
Richardson entered as Moe waited in his living room, the fireplace burning without warmth, its heat shield absorbing any energy. He raised his arms as his client descended to greet him.
“Ah, Terence. Good to see you again.”
“Hello, Moe. How are you?”
“Very good, very good.”
“Thank you for seeing me on your holy day. I’m honored for your attention today.”
“I’m sorry?”
“Today is Eid al-Adha, the most holy of days.”
He looked at the carpeting. “Richardson, you disappoint me.”
A look of concern crossed his face.
“I am Syrian. My line goes back farther than men can reckon. The Assyrian is an ancient race; some say stretching back ninety millennia. In that time, we have worshipped many, many gods under many, many religions. Why would you assume that I worship Allah simply because he’s the most popular or recent?”
“My apologies, my friend.” He clasped his hands to bow.
“Forget it. We’ve been through too much together. Shall we get to it?”
