I just returned from 10 (mostly) glorious days in Greece and Turkey where the symbol of the Evil Eye is literally, everywhere. The evil eye dates back about 5,000 years and is present across various religions and cultures, with the earliest known belief in the power of the evil eye dating back to ancient Greek and Roman times, where it was used to ward off jealous or evil thoughts from others.
What I particularly love about the lore of the evil eye is that it’s not about amplifying harm or cursing those who try to cause harm. It’s about reflecting or returning the negative energy to the person who sent it originally.
How often have you internalized somebody else’s bad mood or made their bad behavior about you?
For years I felt the need to jump in and fix situations that had nothing to do with me. Whether personally or professionally, how often have you tried to defend yourself or your work, prove your capabilities or worth, or bent over backwards explaining yourself to someone who was committed to misunderstanding you?

And how often did that behavior lead to your own resentment, frustration, and burnout?
The evil eye is a reminder that we don’t need take on that which is not ours to take on. Instead of defending, proving, or explaining ourselves we let whatever is coming at us be returned to its sender. With compassion. For them to deal with.
Think about it like a ball game. If someone keeps throwing a ball at you, and you keep catching it and throwing it back, you become entangled in a ball game. But if you let the ball bounce off you, there is no game.
How can you integrate the power of the evil eye into your own life, and what would change for you if you did? After all, it’s not the symbol or the amulet itself that holds the power, it’s you. The amulet is just a reminder that you do not have to catch, hold, or internalize the negativity that others send your way. You can reflect it back to them instead, leaving you centered, calm, and burnout-free.

1 年So glad you enjoyed *most* of your trip! I'd had an incredible trip around Turkey over a decade ago - still stands out for how amazing it was. I loved the symbol of the evil eye as protection there but hadn't heard/seen the indication about it returning the negativity back. That was a new perspective, and one I'm curious to learn more about.
