Everything you need to know about COP28

Welcome to the latest edition of our Do More Good Newsletter, your passport to a more sustainable future with Planet Mark. With COP28 starting today, we are excited to delve into what it means for business and climate.

The start of COP28

Today marks the start of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP). From today until the 12th of December, over 140 world leaders, ministers, and negotiators will gather to address the global climate crisis and how we can tackle it.

Since COP21, the following COPs have prioritised the implementation of the Paris Agreement established in 2015. The Paris Agreement's primary objectives were:

·?? To keep the global average temperature rise ‘well below’ 2°C, and push for an even cooler 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

·?? Adapting to climate change and building resilience

·?? Aligning finance with a pathway toward low greenhouse gas emissions and climate-resilient development.

COP28 has never been more pressing, as an increasing number of people across the globe have experienced record-breaking temperatures and extreme weather events such as wildfires, floods, storms, and droughts this year.

Get to know COP28

Hosted in Dubai, COP 28 has a strong focus on global progress since the creation of the Paris Agreement.

?It is the first 'Global Stocktake' conducted by the UN and will determine how countries are doing — whether countries are making progress or falling short in achieving the goals set out in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Also, leaders and civil servants from across the globe will negotiate new international climate agreements and set their own plans, called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), outlining each nation's commitments to reducing carbon emissions.

What outcomes do we want to see at COP28?

COP28 is critical to setting the scene for this next decade of action, one we believe should move beyond carbon reduction and focus on increased biodiversity and regeneration. Read our vision for this crucial decade for the planetary crisis, here .

To keep on track to mitigating climate change, we hope that COP28 brings increased national ambitions and addresses key issues such as fossil fuel, climate finance and net zero.

1.?? Increased national ambitions: Countries setting new emission reduction targets and legal net zero commitments.

2.?? Stronger wording in the final agreement: shift from "phase down coal" to "phase out all fossil fuels" and much clearer prioritisation of renewable energy development.

3.?? Climate finance: Advancements in climate financing, especially loss and damage funding, as developed nations are still failing to honour their 2015 commitment to provide $100B per year to developing countries to finance climate mitigation and adaptation with clarity on who pays, how much, and for what triggers.

4.?? Climate justice: Ensuring an inclusive approach to negotiations and a just transition to a net zero, climate-resilient economy.
