Dear job seeker,
You are an academic, you are a job seeker and you are currently also suffering from a difficult situation with coronavirus, shutdown, repatriations, and layoffs? You may think that if it was hard before, is it almost impossible now?
You may be wondering:
How can I keep my motivation as a jobseeker? How can I apply for a job and be considered for an interview? Are there companies that hire new employees during the #covid-19 crisis? How can I make myself and my CV more attractive? Why should my future employer hire me? What can I bring to my future workplace?
Take courage. New employees are still needed, and you need to keep your spirits up.
With a desire to help, I’ve been wondering, how I can share with you what I know. Therefore, I choose to share some of my experiences as both a stress coach and a career advisor. (Flowed by 4 live events on Facebook)
In my article, I will address the following topics:
- Mental training, positive psychology
- Your CV and application
- Unsolicited application, digital media
- Interview
- Practice makes you a master
Mental training, positive psychology.
It is all about start in believing in yourself. Most people who go through a layoff or unemployment experience uncertainty and perhaps stress. It is the insecurity around being unemployed, which will make you stressed, and this is a normal state to be in. If you experience stress over a long period, it will hurt, and you will easily end up being more stressed.
I have a few methods that I have tried with several customers and it worked every single time.
Show Gratitude. Yes, you read it correctly. It may sound childish, but no, believe me, if you show gratitude in a good way, then you will experience getting something better back and you will receive positive responses to your gratitude.
So, start by buying yourself a small notebook. You should have it by your side and write down three things you are grateful for every night before going to bed. Three positive things that have happened to you or three good things you have experienced or done during the day and feel grateful for. It is important to write it down and write about the values it has brought to your life.
Ex. I am grateful to live in a country where I am surrounded by nature, and in this time when we are not allowed to meet with our loved ones, I am grateful that I can go for a walk in nature, and I can feel that I have been filled with so much positivity.
Why is it important to have a focus on thoughts of gratitude? Because the more you do it, the more you attract positive things into your life.
Your achievements in life. You spend a few hours reminding yourself of all your positive experiences in life, your accomplishments, your achievements, something you're proud of. Both the small and the larger ones. Write them down and remind yourself of your positive feelings associated with those experiences.
I had a customer who wrote the following: The first time I made meatballs that tasted exactly like my mother's. Oh, that was nice.
Just write in detail. Why is it important to do this exercise? Because when you encounter resistance in life for a long period, you tend to forget how good your feeling was once it first happened in your life.
Start by dreaming and defining a goal and see yourself in the goal. I will teach you a model to describe your goal.
"SMART" model: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-Bound/Timely. That is, when you define your goal, the goal must be precise (here is the job I'm wishing for), the goal must also be undetectable (it's already posted on a job site), achievable (I have the qualifications they require), realistic (I match to the profile) and last but not least, you must choose a time frame in terms of achieving your goal. When you define your goal by using the SMART model, you choose to see yourself in the goal. Here we look at the effect of seeing yourself in the goal.
Your subconscious can only understand commands, quite like your GPS in the car. You enter the address and the car takes you to the address. That is the way it is with your subconscious. There is a difference between dreaming and seeing yourself in the dream/target:
Peter would love to find a job at Novo Nordisk as a project manager, and he is targeting it. He keeps an eye on the company's job postings and as soon as there's a job opening, he starts the process. He contacts the manager (referenced on the post) and asks about the job. In doing so, he learns important details about the job to make the application and the CV as targeted as possible. He sends his application. The company calls him for an interview.
Now it is very important that Peter begins by dreaming of seeing himself in the job even before the interview. And to strengthen the process, he will define a goal where he uses the SMART model. He will do so before he takes to the interview: This is his goal: "I will start my job as Project Manager at Novo Nordisk in Bagsv?rd as of 1st. June 2020."
Peter has just defined his target. He writes it down and hangs it somewhere he can see it daily, and reminds himself of it and keeps his focus. Once the goal is defined, it is important to visualize himself in the target. For example, he may start to think about the following: What is it like to receive the contract and sign the contract? How will he be dressed on the 1st day of the job? What will his first day at work look like? What would he buy with his 1st salary?
The goal is specific. It is achievable because he has been active and has forged some sort of connection with the manager and he has applied for the job. The goal is realistic because he has already been invited to an interview, and he has already a time scale, June 2020. This is done before the interview, he begins to program his subconscious, he sees himself in the goal as a project manager at Novo Nordisk and therefore, his subconscious will enter the address of Novo Nordisk in the GPS, and then the journey starts here.
Use it and we can talk more about it in one of my Live events, which starts after Easter.
Your CV
When was the last time you looked at your CV and your application? Are you someone who uses the same CV and application and changes the name of the recipient and sends them to companies? That's probably why you get a lot of rejections. It is important to get your CV and application done purposefully.
Remember: Your CV is about your past, and your cover letter is about now and the future.
Your RESUME: The first page, is the most important page. You have a new picture, your name, a title on your CV such as Detail-oriented and skilled engineer, with a master's degree and more than 12 years of experience as an Electrical engineer. It means, in one line you have told your future manager about your personality, your education, and about years of experience you have.
The next thing you need to look at is the profile text. It must, of course, reflect the text in the job advertisement (Tasks, and your qualifications).
Then you come to your education and a list of the jobs you've had. Describe briefly and precisely each job and write in detail about your role and the tasks you have been responsible for and the results you have created for that company.
Finally, your language skills and hobbies are important.
Your application
Again, a nice title that is eye-catching and tells them, why you are a match.
A detail-oriented and skilled engineer, with a master's degree and more than12 years of experience as an Electrical Engineer, would like to be part of your team
Then you write about your motivation to apply for the job. You also need to write what you bring with you to the team. Again, you must read the job ad. and refer to the tasks and requirements formulated for the future employee.
Unsolicited application, digital media
At a time when there are so many unemployed people in the job market, it makes sense to be ahead.
Make use of social media
What does your LinkedIn profile look like? Is it up to date? Remember that your LinkedIn is your gross CV. Your profile should be searchable so your future employer or a recruitment consultant/headhunter should be able to find you. Remember to enter your email address in the profile text. Those, who are not connected to you cannot get in touch with you and by adding your email addresses, you will make it easy for people to contact you.
Remember to continuously seek out new connections. Accept everyone into your network, regardless of their education or background. I always tell people that there's a big difference between LinkedIn and Facebook. Everyone is welcome in my LinkedIn, but my Facebook is aimed at those who are either my friends or family or people, I have a kind of relationship to.
When you ask people if they want to be part of your network, be sure to send a private message/request. Why are you interested in this connection? And once they've accepted, remember to acknowledge them for accepting your request. If the person is someone who can help you further with your job search, then you can ask the person if she or he wants to have a "virtual coffee meeting" with you. In these corona times, there are many who have a virtual coffee/tea meeting. Here you can ask if he/she has time to give you a few advice so that you can get on with your job search. I know a few, who got jobs through the coffee meetings, so it can be a good and effective tool.
Finally, and not least, you can post on LinkedIn and describe your situation, what you are looking for and what you can offer your future working place. Add your CV to your profile and ask your network to "Like" and share it with their network. The more traffic around your LinkedIn, the better your chance of being viewed/found on LinkedIn.
Facebook. There are many job pages on Facebook. You can use the same post you already have made on LinkedIn, on your Facebook, both on your own page and on the other job pages.
Job pages
It is a great idea to upload the CV on the different job pages, so you have a good chance of being found. Try with Jobindex, which is one of the biggest job sites.

Coffee meetings.
Yes, with Corona in mind, unfortunately, you cannot ask for coffee meetings, but you can always ask for a Skype-meeting or a conference call. Start making a calling list. Find the companies you'd like to work for. Find the contact. Before you call, it is important that you have done the research: What are their core services, why do you want to work for them, what can you offer the company? Then you call the company, and if they have the time, you can start the dialog. Start by telling about yourself. Who you are. Why do you want to be part of their team and ask what do you need to have to be considered for an interview?
You can also choose to apply for unsolicited. Send an application to the company and tell them why you would like to be part of their organization.
Interview:
Actually, in this corona times, there are still people who get an invitation for an interview, and the meeting is online, Skype, Teams or different Online meeting applications. Get yourself ready for the interview. Remember that it is very important to have an eye on contact with the interviewer during the interview, so therefore you should look at the camera during the interview.
Remember, when having an online interview, the wall behind you should have a neutral appearance, choose a white wall, with no pictures around you. The focus should be on you and on what you tell them. If you need notes, or you need to remember things, you can have them as posted on the wall in front of you: Don't have a paper on the table, it makes disturbing noise.
You've done your preparation by reading about the company's vision, mission and values, you know why you're looking for the job, you know why you're a match for them. Again, do it purposefully.
Tell me a little about yourself but prepare: Make a "Short Story" tell about your life, your background, why the education, and your passion. What can you bring to the company, why should they choose you, why them, yes different questions that means the same. But remember. Make it short and precise so you keep interest captive and not the opposite.
Practice makes you a master
4 Tuesdays after the Easter holiday, I will have a Live meeting on my Facebook group. 45 minutes for Danish speakers and 45 minutes for international.
It is free of charge for everyone.
Under the Live meeting, I will review briefly the above topics and you have the opportunity to ask questions or share your experiences with people who are in the same situation.
Last, but not least, remember to spend time out in beautiful Denmark, the pictures are taken during March 2020:-)
Best wishes
