National Suicide Prevention Month

National Suicide Prevention Month is observed every year in September.

National Suicide Prevention Month.?Suicide is a leading cause of death caused by injuring oneself with the intent to die. A suicide attempt is when someone harms themselves with the purpose of ending their life, but they do not die from their actions.

Many factors can increase the risk of suicide or protect against it. Suicide is associated with other forms of injury and violence. For example, people who have experienced violence, including child abuse, bullying, or sexual abuse have a higher suicide risk. Being connected to family, and community support, and having easy access to health care can decrease suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

Facts about suicide:

  • Nearly 46,000 people in the U.S., died by suicide in 2020.
  • More than 700 000 people, globally, die due to suicide every year.
  • For every suicide, there are many more people who attempt suicide. A prior suicide attempt is the single most important risk factor for suicide in the general population.
  • Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-19 year-olds.
  • 77% of global suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
  • It's estimated that around 20% of global suicides are due to ingestion of pesticides, hanging, and firearms are among the most common methods of suicide globally.

What can we do to help? According to the CDC

  • Ask "Are you thinking of killing yourself?" (While people may be hesitant to ask, research shows this is helpful.)
  • Keep them safe. Reduce access to lethal items or places.
  • Be there with them. Listen carefully and acknowledge their feelings.
  • Help them connect. Call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
  • Stay connected. Follow up and stay in touch after a crisis.

?Are you in a crisis?

  • Please call or text the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
  • Or contact the Crisis Text Line by texting TALK to 741741.

In Celebration of Random Acts of Appreciation

Thank you, Colleen Kelley for reposting this post from Steven J. Shanker, Esq. !?

"I AM NOT LEAVING MY MEN. " On September 11, 2001, Peter James Ganci, Jr. had 33 years with the FDNY. He was the FDNY Chief of Department, the highest-ranking uniformed officer in the department. Immediately after the North Tower was hit at 8:46 A.M., Chief Ganci rushed from FDNY headquarters in Brooklyn, arrived at the World Trade Center in less than 10 minutes, and set up a command post.?

Chief Ganci and others were in the basement of the South Tower when it collapsed at 9:59 A.M., but they dug themselves out of the rubble that had caved in on them. Ganci ordered his men to set up a different command post in a safer location, further north of the buildings. However, Chief Ganci himself returned to the towers, coming to stand in front of 1 WTC where he was directing the rescue efforts.

Chief Ganci instructed Mayor Giuliani, the fire commissioners and others to clear the area because it was apparent the North Tower would fall. However, Chief Ganci himself did not evacuate the area, saying, "I am not leaving my men," and remained at that location with William Feehan, First Deputy Commissioner of the FDNY. Chief Ganci and Deputy Commissioner Feehan were both killed when the North Tower collapsed at 10:28 A.M.?

It was said that Chief Ganci would never ask anyone to do something he wouldn't do himself. It was also said that he was always right at the front lines with his firefighters.

Following the death of Chief Ganci, Chief Daniel Nigro, the FDNY Chief of Operations, was appointed Chief of the Department and was highly regarded for his leadership following the deaths of 343 FDNY firefighters in the attacks.

In 2014, Chief Nigro was appointed FDNY Fire Commissioner. 2 years ago, Commissioner Nigro, renamed the FDNY Medal of Valor, the highest honor for bravery, after Chief Ganci, the legendary Chief who is still revered by the FDNY so many years after his death. Chief Ganci’s two sons followed in his footsteps to the FDNY.?

When NYC needed the FDNY the most, the FDNY was there for us. The FDNY never hesitated on 9/11/01 and never faltered, even when some firefighters knew that day could/would likely be the last day of their lives. That is pure heroism. This is why the FDNY is called “New York’s Bravest.” NEVER FORGET.?

Self-Improvement Month – September 2022

You have survived every single bad day so far. So, don't ever give up! ?

Self-Improvement Month reminds us that we all need to improve — and we all need to care for ourselves. It’s an opportunity to assess how satisfied we are with ourselves and to take the necessary steps to become who we aspire to be.?

According to the late Jim Rohn, "Do not Neglect to do the things that are Easy to do! (Easy = what you can do)"

The Key is to be Consistent & Disciplined.?Appreciate and welcome the Disciplines! Disciplines work Miracles.

Do what you can!

Don't neglect what you can do?

Do the Best you can!

One of the best investments that you can make in your life is to invest in improving yourself physically, spiritually, and mentally. Self-improvement could be any set of steps or actions (minor or major) that you take with an aim of making yourself better than you were before.

If you’re unsure of where to start, here are a few practical ways of improvement to consider:?

  • Pick up a new book - Reading can begin the process of inspiration.
  • Sit in on a seminar, webinar or workshop - You might feel well informed on a topic, listening to others insight on such topic can give you a different perspective and outlook.
  • Wake up earlier - While waking up earlier can be harder for those who work late or have a hard time sleeping at night, beginning your day earlier could actually help you better manage your sleep to ensure you don’t oversleep.
  • Exercise - When you make sure that you are taking care of your body, your mind will follow.
  • Get out of your comfort zone - In order to be the best version of yourself that you can, you must evolve as you get older and wiser. Being afraid of change isn’t healthy for anyone, no matter the circumstances. Shake up your routine, do something different every once in a while!
  • Be accountable to someone other than yourself - A goal not written down is a wish, and a dream not shared is still just a dream. But, once you share it, it takes on a life with you and the listeners.

If you do what is easy, your life will be hard. But, if you do what is hard, your life will be easy!?

?You only fail when you stop trying.
