everything manager (?)
Considering where and how we position business operations management let’s investigate what is scope of activities. I would say picture below is a general overview. Nevertheless, it covers most of the role perspective you can see in organizations. For some parts of this overview be more important than others.
I believe the common outlook for the business operations role is focused on data management, metrics, and reporting. This is for sure an important part that requires focus and right drive. The core purpose of the team is to provide this visibility across the organization through LT. This is not possible with correctly set up the rhythm of the business and staying close to the sales team as well as close to LT. Collaboration across the organization is as important. Connecting dots with the finance team, with the delivery team to see how sales translates to revenue and how it’s delivering business outcomes as promised internally during the sales period. At the end of the date sales is responsible for growth and business operations is to make sure that it is working according to plan but also validate efficiency of taken activities. The team is contributing to strategy and planning with historical data, insights that allow to see where the sales team is successful, where focus is needed. Also consider teams’ impact on the sales team with the quota process. This is so fragile activity having a direct impact on the seller's engagement and company performance. Role of business operations manager is responsible for driving quite a few activities from regular communication, change management, execution of new policies, special projects, and programs.
Business operations has an overly broad span of responsibilities and importance for organization being pivotal in putting organization for success. Managers in those teams need to be equipped with a special skill set that can drive this set of activities, influence organization and build empowerment to be successful. This is what makes those types of roles so exciting and increasingly more important for companies.
