Everything important in life takes time

Everything important in life takes time

Tom Peters often says that “Everything important in Life takes time”. If you can start something and get it done quickly, it probably is not that important.

  • John Wooden didn't win his first national title until his 16th season at UCLA.
  • Starbucks didn’t reach store #5 until 13 years into its history.
  • Sam Walton didn’t open his 2nd store until 7 yrs after starting his company.

In order to plant the seeds for important things… you need to shift your time horizon to the long term.

Be Persistent. Success takes time.

Building trusted Relationships… takes time.

Establishing the support of allies… takes time

Listening… takes time

Thoughtfulness… takes time

Gratitude and small gestures… takes time.

Getting Clarity as a Leader

Tom Peters says that 50% of your time should be unscheduled. He asks “What’s the most important thing you do as a leader?”

I paused and thought…

and then he answered.

"Daydreaming"

Daydreaming. Visualising a better future. Allowing your ideas to flow. Seeing from a bigger perspective.

The Worst thing a Leader can do...

There is nothing worse than a boss running around from one meeting to another, unprepared, arriving late, rushed, busy, frustrated, hassled.

Speed for speed’s sake is crap.

Don’t scale crap.

Great people know that the most important thing is deep, trusting relationships with good people.

What relationships will you invest in over the next month?

Thanks for sharing Conor. It reminded me of Simon Sinek′s book "The Infinite Game".., which is also related to Jim Collin′s question.., what is the great cause that you serve as a leader? Top 5 leaders serve a cause that is bigger than themselves and which is embedded in an infinite game..., that is what purposeful organizations play...when you play infinite games time horizons are seen in a different way.. very inspiring article.., thanks again!!

Conor Neill , thanks a lot for sharing this day-to-day wisdom! There is an expression which supports your thoughts: "Those who works, do not have time to earn". That signifies an importance of reserving some time for inner and outward visionary thinking among endless meetings, reports etc.
