Everything Begins With The First Step

Everything Begins With The First Step

Ever heard of "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"?

Someone shared this image on Twitter the other day and to quote a little 'social media speak', it totally stopped my scroll. Whoever you were, thank you (and please own up in the comments so I can credit you!)

I was reminded of this when both Tim Williams (Onalytica) and I spoke with Shoshanna Davis (Intel) last week - Shoshanna said...

"Don't compare your day 1 with someone else's day 1000".

Some days I feel overwhelmed.

Some days I look at my calendar and think "how on earth am I going to get through that".

Some days I look at my weekend of kids parties and activities and yawn at the thought of it.

Some days I feel like those steps are just one of those rotating steps you find in a gym. I go no-where but feel utterly shattered trying.

Some days I sit at my desk from 8am to 8pm, skip meals and can't be bothered to exercise as a result.

But it's on those difficult days, when I'm feeling at my most overwhelmed and under-productive, that I need to take the first step.

Just a teeny, tiny first step in the right direction.

Why am I writing this?

Because we often look at others on social media comparing our day 1 with their day 1000. I know I do. It can spiral me into a place where I feel I'm not hitting the mark as a leader, a mummy or a friend. But it's often a blip.

I recognise my secret sauce to productivity is good sleep, good diet and regular exercise. If one of those slip, the rest fall with it and I'm bumping down that staircase quicker than I can say "Get a grip, Sarah".

My advice: Know what elements get you in your good place and recognise when one of them is slipping. Take your first step to get you back on track.

Resonate with you? What elements do you balance to stay on track?

Great motivational post Sarah. Glad your Wed was better than Mon. ?? I find that the expectation, always on in social and juggling many different competing priorities has overwhelmed most of the people I know to a greater or lesser extent especially over the past 2 years. When I feel overwhelmed or things go against me I try to wake up the next morning my step forward is thinking about 2 things: - How I can use this for personal development? What can I do differently? - If I have gone back 1 step how can I take 2 steps forward and turn this into something more positive.

I'm with Lyn on this one, speaking to others really does help with coping. My weekly rants with Emma about my personal life and even work-related stuff definitely puts me in a more positive mood.

Thanks, Sarah. For me, focusing on how I can help others through their days helps me get on with mine. It is easy to forget the blessings we have.
