Everyone Prospers: The Path to Equity

Omaha is changing. Omaha has changed. As a community, we are doing better than the national average, and we have much work still to do. That was the message from the latest public discussion sponsored by Heartland 2050 and United Way.

Local leaders like David Brown, President & CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber and Thomas Warren Sr., President & CEO of the Urban League of Nebraska joined a panel discussing topics ranging from economic and real estate development to racial inequality and transportation. The accomplishments of the last 20 years were held up and celebrated, while acknowledging the gaps that remain between those of privilege and those without, and the exciting opportunities for this region to not just improve but lead the way forward.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Michael McAfee, President of PolicyLink lead a presentation of various socioeconomic demographics and statistics. Drawing on his experience in consulting communities across the country, Dr. McAfee shared the challenges and progress of the work in towns like ours to move beyond equality and towards providing real equity for the lower and middle classes.

It was a morning well spent learning from local civic and business leaders as well as hearing the national perspective of the consultants from PolicyLink. For those of you interested in reading more on the material presented, I have included the link below.
