Everyone has an opinion on round tables vs trestle tables - what is best for guest chat?

The trend in Australia for the private market has definitely moved towards trestle/banquet tables in the last ten years with 90% of our events using long table floor plans. Why is that?
?
Despite common belief, you are closer to your guests sitting on long tables & therefore are able to chat to more people. Long tables vary from 75cm-1.2m wide so you are only sitting that distance from 3 guests opposite plus the guest either side of you. Round tables range from 1.5m-2m wide so in a full room you only end up talking to the guests either side of you.
?
Table linen works out to be cheaper on joined, long tables of 24+ guests as table cloths are available larger than the tables. It’s means you don’t require one cloth per table.

Most table hire companies recommend that a 1.8m round table can seat 10-12 guests. 10-12 guests are fine unless you are setting your table with a charger plate (base plate) or a placemat as this takes up more room. If this is the case, I would recommend a maximum of 8 settings per table to ensure everyone is comfortable. It is worth doing a mock-up of your table setting design to ensure there is enough room for all items chosen. This can be on your lounge room floor if a 1.8m round table isn’t readily available! 12 guests should only ever be allocated to a 1.8m table when you are only serving one course & the guests really, really, really like each other as they are crammed in…

Space wise, each setting ideally requires 60cm width & 40cm depth to accommodate a 3 course meal cutlery, crockery & glassware. This allows for a 50cm centrepiece allowance on a 1.8m round table. Keep in mind this space also needs to accommodate the venue requirements - salt & pepper, bread, butter, water etc. This calculation also allows for 40cm down the middle of a 1.2m wide trestle tables, 10cm down the middle of a 90cm wide trestle table & well, stuff all space on a 75cm wide table!!
?
When calculating how many guests can fit on a long table, work on one setting every 60cm so a 1.8m rectangle table can seat 3 guests each side, a 2.4m rectangle table can seat 4 guests each side.

If all else fails & I actually have made no sense at all, send through your table sizes and design & I’m happy to give you my table spatial awareness expertise!?

2 个月We love a rectangle table however it makes conversation for guests harder. And you need more decor I find. There is definitely a place for them though.
