Everyone In Gen-Z Has Gone Viral On TikTok At Least Once

Unless you've been living under a rock, or are over the age of 70, you've probably heard of this new TikTok app. No social media site has gotten kids so glued to their phones, teenagers so excited, and adults so confused quite like ByteDance's flagship product, TikTok. But why has it grown so large? Why is it so addicting? And how can you take advantage of the single greatest gold rush opportunity our generation has seen?

"STOP. You've been scrolling for way too long"

If you've ever been a victim of getting sucked into your "fyp" for an unhealthy amount of time then the above message is familiar to you. TikTok used to play a video after you scrolled for a long time without stopping, warning of the dangers of being glued to social media. The fact that this feature existed is a testimony to the power of TikTok's algorithms, and the key to its massive growth.

TikTok arguably has the most robust algorithm for predicting exactly what content you will enjoy. This leads you down an endless loop of new and exciting content based on exactly your interests, meaning its rare to find videos that you can't relate to, or are excited by.

Average Session Time by social media platform. Statistics from eMarketer on TikTok, YouTube, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, and FaceBook.

Other social platforms do this too, but can never do it in the same way TikTok does. That's because on platforms such as Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and FaceBook you are mainly seeing content from people that you follow. While this may seem like a better way to be shown the content you like, it is actually much less effective. That's because not every single post that your favorite influencer, your friends, or your family post is going to be super interesting. A few boring posts in a row and you are likely to close the app.

TikTok fixes this problem by essentially just feeding you an endless stream of videos that are all proven to be highly engaging with other users and line up with your interests. You are only going to be watching the top level of engaging content. Understandably this can make it hard to break the trance.

"I'm going viral!" -Literally everyone in Gen-Z

Now, full discretion, I myself am a TikTok influencer with half a million followers, many videos with millions of views, and many friends who also do TikTok for a living. However, its not just my TikTok friends that go viral. All too often I see friends of mine or meet people my age who just posted a random video that got a million views.

This isn't because they just happened to have a stroke of genius one time and engineer a viral video out of nowhere with no experience. No. Going viral seemingly on accident is another biproduct of TikTok's revolutionary concept and algorithm.

Knowing that anything you post has a chance of getting blasted to millions of people regardless of your following is enough motivation to push people to post relentlessly. Now, imagine if instead of just posting a video of your cat, you were posting about your business.

"Shooters keep shooting"

A great case study of a business that went from zero to hero purely through TikTok is a hard seltzer brand, Nectar, founded by Jeremy Kim and John Dalsey. This brand went from knocking 200 business' doors selling their product to no avail to suddenly selling out their entire supply overnight.

It started when they posted just one TikTok of them boxing up an order, which promptly shot up to 30,000 views. This small success emboldened the pair to go even harder, "Shooters keep shooting" said founder Jeremy Kim.

After just days of continuing to post they were reaching 100s of thousands of consumers with their videos. This free exposure was so great that when their first video scored over 500,000 views overnight they arrived to mayhem in the shop the next morning. They had sold out their entire supply.

"Just keep posting" -Joey Sendz, who knows you can succeed

To wrap it up, I would like to leave you with my best advice for TikTok. Just keep posting. When I first started TikTok I went 100 videos without going viral, luckily for me I had days where I was posting 20 times. So, virality came fast, 100k followers in the first 25 days and 500k followers within the first 3 months.

You will hear influencers such as Gary Vee preaching this same message, and I am right there with them. There has never been such a great opportunity for getting mass exposure for your business, so just start posting. You may be surprised how fast it all can happen.

By the way, if you'd like to chat about TikTok, content creation, online presence, or anything in that realm my DM's are open. Shoot me a connection request!
