Everyone creates products, but Usability and User Experience?

At times we get into mode of just creating products and may be well designed too but the end product intentionally/unintentionally falls short of usability and user experience.

In the recent past I hit upon couple of products, and no, they are not software products and after using them was definitely not pleased on the contrary, was wondering who created these and what were they thinking? User Empathy??

Many of us would have had experience with Junction or Switch boxes like below one. A perfectly finished product, but a pen isn't enough! Need an user manual!

Looks like the bottom steps are newly done, but hard to explain the rationale behind adding them to get to an escalator! When with baby stroller it cant be used well and doesn't leave a good experience.. Appears like a enhancement on a legacy application! Delivered successfully but doesn't fully serve the purpose!

The only advantage of tying a TV remote? At least wont loose it and spend time searching for it!! Nevertheless, better than walking up to a TV all the time to change a channel even if you are virtually chained to the remote!

I still think makers of these products didn't really intend to cause inconvenience to users, but in the age of user experience how long can we not think about Usability and User experience?

Do share your own such experiences

That's what happens when people invest more in how it looks, and not enough in how it functions. Just take a walk around the neighborhood, and you'll see examples galore: parks that are inaccessible to children and elders - no swings AND no chairs, buses that don't stop where they are supposed to, utility bills that require a PhD to decipher, and amazingly convoluted methods of applying coupons at the local supermarket...the list is endless.

Insightful examples… In the world of Branding and Marketing, we create something and then develop necessity for that product in masses…. However, UX is taking a considerable importance now a days and thanks for bringing focus on that by your post…

I would say Human Centered Design (HCD) is missing, thanks to Don Norman I am understanding it now. Hopefully people will move to HCD if not it will be difficult.
