Communication and connecting?are crucial?and?critical competencies for?everyone, not just leaders.?
During my long-standing business career, I've met one corporate CEO who displayed incredible leadership finesse. The difference between this leader and leaders I observed over the years, is that this leader was able to connect with ease, while displaying high-level communication expertise.
This leader genuinely 'walked the talk' and subsequently also had a profound influence on my leadership development style.
This leader didn't only communicate with excellence, but genuinely connected with people and understood the communication brief of an outstanding CEO.
This leader didn't just 'talk the talk' or walk the CEO walk - but 'talked and walked their talk', with a high-level understanding of leadership craft. Not always a given combination.
This leader was well-read, encouraging a reading culture in the company. Now retired, but one never forgets such immaculate leadership. I regard myself lucky to have enjoyed an environment in which everyone was encouraged to participate and take collective responsibility.
This leader commanded attention in a conference room, but also nurtured the audience with empathy and respect, without compromising on business outcomes responsible for. Nobody shirked professional duties under such strong tutelage. There was a 'no-whinging' rule in-place which influenced a thriving workplace.
This kind of leadership style requires some important tools to ensure one's daily wellbeing. Leaders who understand the art of connecting with themselves first, don't get stuck on the leadership brief.
Leaders who can wear their coaching hat, connect better with people. It's broader than just engaging the efforts of business consultants hired to help executives build better skills. While that work is important and vital, it's temporary and usually executed by outsiders not there to connect, as part of their contract.
The coaching spoken about here, is the kind that creates a learning organization. It's ongoing and executed by those inside the organization. It’s work that all managers and team leaders should engage in with all their people all of the time. It helps define the organization’s culture and advances its company mission.

In summary: An effective manager also wears a coaching hat. 1. Asks questions instead of providing answers. 2. Supports employees, instead of judging them. 3. Facilitates self-development instead of dictating what has to be done.
Executive coaching services are fast becoming a must-have, not nice-to-have. People who can genuinely connect with each other, achieve stronger relationships, experience less conflict?and?get more done.
As the saying goes, 'Ma te wa' ... all in good time.
Let's generate a culture of genuine connection.
