Everyone can learn how to coach

Imagine having someone that you can talk to about anything in the world, your struggles, your doubts, your fears and your hopes. That someone could be a best friend or perhaps your spouse. But sometimes, although we can share with a spouse or a good friend, they may not be able to challenge us and help us move forward. A coach can do that because she/he has learnt how to do that. The coaching approach helps by raising awareness, providing support and challenging others to move forward.

We don't need to be professional coaches to be able to coach. By learning the basics of coaching skills, everyone (at the workplace, at home) can be more effective peer coaches. Mentors can be more effective at using the coaching style and TAE/HR/HRD professionals can use the coaching approach with their stakeholders.

Institute of Adult Learning (IAL) Singapore, a subsidiary of Singapore University of Social Science (SUSS) is now offering a 1 day CPD (continuing professional dev) course to equip people with sufficient coaching skills to be able start coaching and I hope this will start to make this a prevalent practice. I'm happy to be delivering the program - there is 1 run every month (7 Oct, 13 Nov and 17 Dec) and there will be plenty of skills practice.
