Not Everyone Can Have the Starring Role, But You Can Be a Star in Your Role.

Not Everyone Can Have the Starring Role, But You Can Be a Star in Your Role.

Being a star isn’t for everyone. Most times, it’s just not in the cards.?Only a few reach the lofty pinnacle of true “star” status.?That doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for a “starring” role in whatever endeavor you pursue – whether in theater, school, business, sports, or the most important place of all ? your personal life.?Chasing stardom isn’t for everyone and many times it’s a deterrent to living a fulfilling life.?There is an adage from music’s Top 40’s legend Casey Kasem that applies: ”Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”?Here’s some counsel on being a star in any role based upon years of observations and reflections. ?

Know Your Limitations

There’s much truth in Clint Eastwood’s classic line, “A man’s got to know his limitations.”?It’s about being honest with yourself.?The best people across any line of work accentuate their strengths while concealing their weaknesses.?Very few people readily acknowledge their shortcomings.?We all have them.?There’s jargon that accurately describes this notion.?“Stay in your own swim lane.”?There’s nothing more career killing than being in a role for which you’re not prepared.?It has the ability to wreck a career. There will always be people who are better than you at something.

Be True to Your Authentic Self

Too many times I’ve viewed people trying to be someone that they’re not.?There is only one true you – make it count.?Don’t try to be someone else.?Everyone wants to sit at the cool kid table. Why not start your own cool kid table? ?People gravitate to those who are comfortable in their own skin.?

Listen More.?Ask About Someone

There are no truer words than listening your way into a sale and, conversely, talking your way out of it.?Too many people get caught up talking, especially about themselves. Make it a point to stop and listen more.?Ask about others.?Be inquisitive and demonstrate that you care about them.?This is a quality that people can relate to. A really good listener is rare.??Work hard to be one.??Remember what was said. You’ll see the return.?

Always Give Back

Recognize it.?Many of us have already won multiple lotteries in our lives.?Born in the right zip code.?Had great role models as parents.?The list is endless.?Too many haven’t been blessed with winning that lottery ticket.?Be the conduit that grants a “lotto” to lift others up.?Be a star in someone’s eye.?Do something for someone else.?There is no better role.

Enjoy the Ride – Let the Career and Life Journey Play Out

Too many people find themselves caught up in the trap of rising to the next step.?There is nothing wrong with having lofty aspirations.?However, often the problem is they don’t truly enjoy the journey along the way.?It can come at you fast and be gone in a blink of an eye.?Take the time to stop and reflect.?Enjoy your successes and learn from the failures.?Share your wisdom.?It’s all part of this great experience of life.

Be a star by charting your own path.?Find your calling – one that’s all you.?Make a difference and leave an imprint.?Cultivate lifelong friends.?Be there in time of need.?Send the elevator back down.?These are all limitless ways to be a “star.”?Who knows, if you’re lucky someone may name a star after you!!!??

I think of my dad when reading this Bill. Simple man, pulled out of school too soon and lived a respectful life as a husband, father, and janitor. But he was a darn good one, navigating the halls and offices of City Hall in Hartford , emptying the trash of “star” councilmen and women, the Mayor and all others in between. He was loved and admired for his dedication and loved his work, earning him a grand retirement party that unfortunately I missed. This June 19 it will be 25 years since he’s been gone and I’d say he’s a star ?? in rhe sky shining brightly!
