Everydayness

Everydayness

Excerpt from diary of code monkey Bubbles.

Day 1

New project kickoff meeting. Everyone is excited. My subconscious nags me about the scope and deadline but I know better.

Day 2

The project plan was drafted today. It's a good plan.

Day 7

Plan update meeting. Chief Architect Snowflake wants to do things differently this time.

Day 14

We have built a walking skeleton. It does not walk. We are back at the drawing board.

Day 29

Today we demonstrated the first product version to the clients. They are confused.

Day 30

New meeting and a simpler plan: row the galley harder.

Day 37

More meetings. I just listened and nodded.

Day 45

The clients inquired about the progress. Our manager was afraid to tell them the truth and promised everything will be delivered on time.

Day 100

We have a new manager. She is not afraid, she lies too.

Day 132

Clients were told the truth but they prefer the opposite. Compromise was reached to tell them half-truth.

Day 145

Finally we have a working product. 90% of the features are implemented and another 90% are still in the TODO backlog.

Day 150

Yesterday master Soo and master Bingo were hit by a bus and hospitalized.

Day 153

I visited the masters. They are in better shape than I am.

Day 162

External consultants were hired to help us to keep up the good work.

Day 172

I have spent the last three days resolving code merge conflicts.

Day 189

Clients requested a big change. We agreed to add AI capabilities to the product for up-selling users.

Day 193

A Trivia game was integrated into the product. Our AI asks users a series of questions, ignores the answers, and provides a random result.

Day 201

We demonstrated the AI to the clients. They are super impressed.

Day 261

I have not slept for the last two days.

Day 266

Soo has deleted the code I have written in the last week.

Day 317

Today I cried.

Day 347

Clients found a critical bug in our AI. I am working on the fix.

Day 368

The fix works 9 times out of 10. Snowflake says 9 is better than 8.

Day 369

We shipped the product to the clients.

Day 3?7?0? 1

New project kickoff meeting. Everyone is excited. My subconscious nags me again...
