Everyday Sustainability

Everyday Sustainability

This newsletter will now be coming to you under a new name. Everyday Sustainability!

I have always been passionate about energy access and sustainability, a factor that can be attributed to my upbringing. Those who know my story know that I grew up in the village and like any child growing up in this environment, we spent a lot of our time doing chores such as herding and milking cows, fetching water from the river, looking for firewood, picking pyrethrum or tea (depending on the crop in season) and tilling the farmland. All these early duties taught me responsibility, resilience, and the value of hard work.

In my household, we learnt to be responsible early in life, thanks to my parents who both worked as teachers. So, in addition to making sure you did what you needed to do to keep the house running; we were also expected keep up with our studies. This meant that we had to huddle around our kerosene lamp to keep up with the schoolwork. This however was not an option for some my neighbors who could not afford the lamps and had to work and do everything before darkness set in. Then, we did not have solar lanterns as they were yet to be invented.

Not all was doom and gloom. There were lots of fun moments as well. Our village had the best environment. Surrounded by the forest, the air was always fresh and around us was a bustling river that reminded us that water is life. The rainy season brought much life to that river, and in turn to our village.

This situation has since changed. Over time, I have witnessed the river that once moved with so much roar die off to become a tiny stream. This is the ugly head of deforestation and destruction of the water towers.

The careless destruction to our environment has brought us to where we are today. A place where the world is facing the biggest challenge yet: climate change. Without immediate action, the earth is expected to get 4.1°C – 4.8°C warmer by the end of the century. Despite some progress, we are still far from being on track to avoid this scenario. But I believe we can all do something to minimize these effects.

Every small step counts, hence, this biweekly read from ‘Everyday Sustainability’.

Are there any everyday sustainability efforts we can do to help save mother earth?

I would love to hear from you.

Issue a message to every child born that their future food will depend on if their parents took good care and protect the environment near them. If not, they will surely die.

Environmental sustainability is of enormous importance in the modern world. Big companies should embrace sustainability by following the triple bottom line and by doing so support sustainability campaigns in terms of reduction of carbon footprint by use of clean energy and re-afforestation and afforestation programs. They should also utilize the Rs of Sustainability Recycle, Reuse and Reduce and with this we will save our flora and fauna from extinction and reduce encroachment of deserts and rise in the levels of sea. Green house gas emissions has been a major challenge to the world with developed countries emitting the lion share of various green house gases such Carbon iv Oxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Carbon ii oxide among others which destroys our ozone layer bringing in poisonous rays which are carcinogenic . If we don't embrace sustainability we are doomed as humanity because if the current trend of drought continues merged with war it can be the end of the world. We thank SE and its leadership for embracing sustainability and supporting through their social sustainability programs.

Interesting piece Carol Koech The story cuts across many villages and many homesteads. A lot needs to happen, but I know we will make progress. Much concerted effort should be emphasised on developing appropriate interventions that would resonate with the local communities and small villages across the Nation. These communities experience the extreme adverse effects of climate change. But it begins with creating those little communications spaces and avenues. All the best.
