The Everyday Sales Rep's Guide to ChatGPT

The Everyday Sales Rep's Guide to ChatGPT

Generative AI is revolutionizing our daily routines. It’s quickly becoming our 24-hour, seven-days-a-week assistant, reshaping every profession and how we think about work. The best part? It tirelessly works non-stop, automating the mundane and letting us focus on more creative tasks.?

Now, imagine ChatGPT is in a separate room behind a closed door. The only way to communicate is by slipping a hand-written note under that door. ChatGPT doesn’t know who you are or what you need. This is why straightforward prompt engineering is so crucial for effectively communicating with AI.?

If you’re new to ChatGPT or only use it occasionally, these seven actionable tips will help you get the most out of this awesome tool in no time.?

  1. Be Clear and Concise: Be specific and direct. ChatGPT can’t read your mind. The clearer your prompt, the better the output. Cut the fluff and get to the point.?
  2. Define the Task: Describe the exact task or question you need help with when crafting your prompt. Make sure ChatGPT gets it.? Providing background information can sharpen the output. Lean on action verbs like “summarize,” “craft,” or “recommend” to clarify your intent.?
  3. Imagine You Are: This is my favorite tip on the list. Create a persona for your prompt, like a buyer or a seller. The deeper you dive into a persona’s needs and challenges, the more tailored ChatGPT’s response is. Use phrases like “Imagine you are'' or “Act as” to set the stage.?
  4. Get Specific About Formatting: Specify the exact format you want, whether it's changing the word count, switching to bullet points, or using specific email frameworks, like PAS. Clear formatting instructions lead to clearer answers.?
  5. Build on Conversations: ChatGPT remembers the conversation history. Continue in the same chat for related topics to enrich the context and ensure more accurate responses. This shines when discussing strategies or topics that need multiple interactions, like developing an ideal customer profile.?
  6. Provide Examples: Context is king. Offering examples quickly adds context without lengthy explanations, whether It’s outreach templates or MEDDIC fields. You can even set the desired formatting through examples.?
  7. Try, Try Again: Perfect prompts don’t happen on the first try. It’s an iterative process. Experiment, refine, and optimize. A slight tweak can lead to a vastly different and creative response.?

Sales teams can leverage #ChatGPT for a variety of tasks ranging from generating discovery questions to role-playing customer objections. The better your prompts, the more time you’ll save. With practice, #PromptEngineering will take your sales game to the next level, making you a more productive and capable salesperson.?

Found this helpful? Share and comment with your own favorite tips.? Stay tuned for Part 2, where we’ll dive deeper into specific use cases for sales reps.

Great points, Joe Mullen. Liked your analogy of 'slipping a paper under a door.' I often find many don't understand its time constraints. So 'under a door and back in time.' For ChatGPT 4 that's April 2023 recently. No, this week's sports scores won't result in a good prompt result. That said one can prompt it current info (being careful of privacy) and get associated current results. A few examples are generating summaries, formatting, creating charts from data and the like. We are helping clients assess opportunities and explore private, secure GenAI. Looking forward to part 2!
