St. Patrick’s Day has always been a special day. It’s not just that some of my roots are Irish – but that special things have always happened on St. Patrick’s Day. My alma mater, Fairfield University, was founded on this day in 1942. In high school, my cheerleading squad marched in the St. Patrick’s Day parade. And I have enjoyed Irish soda bread every year on this day.
I began my day with that tradition, that special bread, this year too. I know that tradition and nostalgia aren’t just foundational experiences; they can prompt us to think about our day – our life – in specific ways. They can move us back in time. They can change our focus. They can inspire us. In the back of my thoughts all day was George Bernard Shaw’s quote:
“The heart of an Irishman is nothing but his imagination.”
Maybe that is really the luck of the Irish – after all, imagining is the beginning of any story.
Here’s an Irish Blessing for all:
“May your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks. May your heart be as light as a song. May each day bring you bright, happy hours. That stay with you all the year long.”
Yes, "may your thoughts be as glad as the shamrocks."
