Everyday Life Sciences Heroes- Johnson Li, Regional Sales Manager, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences

Today, our “Everyday Life Sciences Heroes” series shines the spotlight on the fast-growing biotechnology industry. We speak with Dr. Johnson Li , Regional Sales Manager, Beckman Coulter Life Sciences Asia Pacific to understand the trends and demands in the growing biotechnology industry, and how Beckman Coulter Life Sciences is helping customers leverage technology to overcome challenges in their daily work.

1. Around the world, the biotechnology industry continues to grow strongly. What can you tell us about the demands and trends in the biotechnology industry?

The applications for biotechnology are multiple, not just in healthcare but also agriculture, food technology, environment, energy management, and even DNA technology. In working with Asia Pacific customers, our teams at Beckman Coulter Life Sciences are seeing customers trending toward genetic engineering which is more environment-friendly than chemical synthesis. We are also seeing their need for reduced time-to-market. The implications of these trends are the demands on bioprocess development, both upstream and downstream.

?

2. What would you say are the challenges that your biotechnology customers in Asia Pacific are facing and how is Beckman Coulter Life Sciences helping them?

Due to confidentiality agreements with customers, I cannot divulge specifics. However, I can say that our teams are helping customers overcome their daily challenges such as microbial cultivation and workflow improvements. Some of the key issues are the characterization of genetic elements, growth and expression, the selection of the most productive strains, and media and parameter optimization.

3. What technologies are you using to help Asia Pacific biotechnology customers?

As our biotechnology customers are dealing with time pressures in their laboratory environments, they need reduced hands-on time while the increasing output of high-quality data in their work. We are helping them achieve these objectives with our BioLector XT microbioreactor, the next-generation high-throughput microbioreactor that enables real-time evaluation of biomass, fluorescence and other key cultivation parameters for aerobes and anaerobes. With this solution, customers can quickly gain deep insights into their bioprocess development.

We are incredibly proud of our BioLector XT microbioreactor because its latest innovations are based on actual customer inputs and feedback. We listened to our customers, drove the innovation, and now this microbioreactor is helping customers on their bioprocessing journeys.?

Launched in 2021, the BioLector XT microbioreactor offers high-throughput bioprocessing that delivers high-quality data fast, is easy to operate, and has a small footprint that fits into any lab. When used with the optional Microfluidic Module, the BioLector XT microbioreactor can further empower customers by enabling the use of 2 reservoir wells per 4 cultivation wells for example. In situations where customers need the high-throughput cultivation and online monitoring capability of the BioLector microbioreactor with the precise and accurate liquid handling of a robotic system, we recommend the use of our RoboLector platform with the BioLector XT microbioreactor. ?

4. Can you share with us how one of your customers is using the BioLector XT microbioreactor?

Yes, let me share with you one of the latest scientific publications in early 2022. This mRNA therapeutics customer used our BioLector Pro microbioreactor in tests involving the Escherichia coli (E. coli) auxotrophic growth assay.

The full paper ‘Therapeutic enzyme engineering using a generative neural network’ was published on 27 January 2022 at Scientific Reports, link: Therapeutic enzyme engineering using a generative neural network | Scientific Reports (nature.com) ?

5. In closing, what would you like to say to your customers in the biotechnology industry?

The possibilities for biotechnology to do good are vast. I’d like to cite Biotechnology definition from The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) - “At its simplest, biotechnology is technology based on biology - biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet.” (reference link: What is Biotechnology? | BIO)

I am humbled and excited to be part of our Asia Pacific biotechnology industry, working with team members and our customers to push the frontiers of science for a better world. ?
