Everyday Human Resource Management : GIVE ME 1 MORE CHANCE/TIME!

Everyday Human Resource Management : GIVE ME 1 MORE CHANCE/TIME!

Unfortunately, there are many people who lost their employment due to something that was deemed "unforgiveable".

Many have had their employment services terminated because they did something that contravened the law of the land and/or the guidelines of the organization's employment manual.

Reasons for termination for cause can range from habitual lateness and absenteeism to harassment, incompetence, insubordination, off-duty conduct that damages the company's reputation, workplace dishonesty, or workplace violence.

A survey by Airtasker reveals that around 32% of people got fired from a job in their lifetime due to multiple reasons. The most common, according to survey participants, included personality conflict, office politics, poor performance, weak attendance, and poor management. (GOOGLE)

IS THERE FORGIVENESS?

If you can't do the time, don't do the crime.

A job-seeker applies for employment and background checks are done. It is revealed that the job-seeker was "fired" because of a "corporate crime".

The job-seeker does not have a colourful history of "crime" or "breaking the law" but records reveal that their employment was terminated from a previous employer due to doing something deemed unlawful.

During the interview, the job-applicant does not "come clean" and say that they were terminated and for what reason.

THE GOLDEN RULE

If we are or were in that job-seekers shoes, wouldn't we want the interviewing employer to give us another chance or did we get the appointment to the role of the General Manager of the Universe - that we are JUDGE - JURY - EXECUTIONER?

CASE BY CASE

Does it all depend on each job-seeker's case and "corporate-crime" they did at their last employer?

We certainly would want to know why they got fired! Was it:

  • Late coming?
  • Theft?
  • Poor performance?
  • Outright disrespect to their peers or seniors?

WE WANT OR NEED TO KNOW....

Depending on the reason for their employment termination, if they "learnt from their error" or are they a repeat offender?

IMPRESSIVE RéSUMé

The past places-of-employment revealed that the job-applicant has the necessary & required experience and then some.

How much are we prepared to risk in this job-applicant? Will the applicant repeat the "evil-deeds" from the past or did they "learn their lesson"?

GOOD CORPORATE CITIZEN

Will you the corporate citizen, will you the employment agency - are you prepared to take a chance on the colourful job-applicant or there's no room for persons with a past list of employment-performance failures despite they being a professional in their field of expertise?

In all recruitment exercises, there is a risk. There is a risk that the person will fail as suspected or the person who was hired turned out to be a super sigh of relief, that they are performing and exceeding expectations!

Are you, the employer - the recruiter, prepared to give the 'coloured-past' candidate a chance?
