Like your muscles, your mind needs stimulation to grow, expand, and stretch throughout your lifetime. We are in a time where lifelong learning in essential and to adapt to this rapidly changing world. We need to be creative to find solutions and opportunities. We need to make things up: new rules, new ways of working, new strategies, new alliances - old patterns will not apply - or they need to be applied to different systems. Our "creative muscles" are the tool that we need to do this and we need to do things every day to exercise these muscles. As my passion has always been to craft tools facilitate creativity, I've been engaging in a number of activities to exercise my creativity over the past couple months that I'd like to share with you:
- I've been journaling - recording the world around me, ideas, and art, wherever I go.
- I've been sharing pages from my archive of 30 years of journaling each day to my Instagram feed.
- I've experimented with simultaneously creating drawings and music.
- I've enhanced my Journalist app to add a 360 drawing feature and image recognition.
- I've been cataloging, tagging, and organizing my artwork using Adobe Lightroom CC. Here are my watercolors from the past 30 years, for example.
- I delivered a presentation to customers at work using my artwork instead of stock photography.
- I delivered a presentation about my 30 years of journaling to classmates and Deerfield Academy reunion attendees.
- I've created workshops on AirBnB experiences and Try studio to get more people into journaling.
You might see a pattern here to what I do in my free time. I try to do something creative everyday and share it. I do this so I can experiment and be more creative and I can inspire others to do the same. For my work at Microsoft, my creativity is essential to my success. What creative things to you do everyday?
Create on!
