Often we hear people speaking of being authentic, real, and transparent.. These are the "cool" words of the new century. Makes one think that these buzz words - being a part of your "brand"- is as cultural as say the cliche "networking" was in the '80's.
What do you think when you hear the??comments "I have no enemies, everyone I meet loves me!" or "I try to make sure I don't ever ruffle feathers", or "gee, that individual is so popular, and everyone loves him/her, because he/she is so real".
Really? I ask... how can that be? How can Anyone be real, and authentic and true to oneself but have NO enemies. NONE? Zip? Nada?
How can Anyone be real and, authentic to Oneself, and ones internal value system,?and still never trample on anyone else's toes?
Authentic, true, honest, values..?and popularity? that seems to be a Catch 22 doesn't it?
Being Authentic means being true to ones value system no matter if it goes beyond the 'status quo' ... and yes, it can also mean pushing the envelope, by standing up, sticking to, and believing in what is important to you.
Being popular in today's society?means sharing the same or similar common value system and following the status quo. Being friendly, amicable is one of the most important values systems of being popular. It means constantly living up to the expectations of the Status Quo, the Common beliefs, and the common or shared acceptance.?
Which therefore leaves a hanging question?- If one is being true to one's internal value system, knowing that if you stood up for yourself, or others; if you continued to defend what you believed in, would you be considered popular? or would you be considered rocking the boat? pushing the envelope? the devils advocate? the anarchist? the anti-christ??
Would you truly consider yourself to be considered Honest and true to yourself??
Most importantly if we speak of transparency, then should we not remember this one important facet?- that it is so very important to never compromise ones values for popularity..?
Especially as?that is the characteristic?what makes us all unique as individuals.
There is always going to be someone to say that the lemonade is too sour or too sweet.. No matter how much love you put into it. Your emotions of the day, will predicate your response and reaction.?
True.. There are many people that I have had total respect for but may not have great fondness for.. and there are people I actually like to hang around with, and have lots of fun, and have no respect for at all.?There individuals who I love as human beings, but cannot stand what they do much of the time.?
All in all, we must remember, that In life there are three sides to every story -- Like a coin.. there is?heads, tails,??and then the truth in the middle... Nothing is totally black or white, there is always gray inbetween them both.?

Yikes, that's discouraging, don't you think.. How often do you think you are getting the truth about How Amazing you really are.. when it's just people going with the flow..?
Reminds me of the story of the?Emperor's New Clothes..?Frankly, I want to be more like the little boy who said "but, he's naked, he doesn't have any clothes on", rather than be the one who goes along with a lie..?to be popular..?
Wouldn't you??

8 年Karen thanks for the article. I was just discussing the same subject with my husband. Yes it is a catch 22. I am not quiet sure what anyone is looking for . I am that one person that speaks honestly and look for values. But it seems I need to adjust my own beliefs to meet the status quo and frankly I hate it
