Every Teacher is a Writing Teacher

?? Hello Purposeful Educators! ??

As we begin our journey in 2024, 12 weeks at a time, we embrace a powerful truth: every teacher is a writing teacher. This edition focuses on AI's potential to help us all in improving writing skills for all students. Recognizing the profound importance of writing, we must acknowledge its unique power to amplify voices. Through enhanced writing skills, we open doors to self-expression, critical thinking, and opportunities, creating a more equitable and inclusive learning environment. Together, we'll explore how this cutting-edge tool can enhance writing skills across all disciplines, uniting our passion for teaching with innovative technology to empower our students' voices.

With the innovative possibilities of AI at our fingertips, I invite you to join me in a focused and exciting challenge for the next 12 weeks: to improve students' writing abilities. Whether you teach language arts, science, history, or any other subject, this goal is for all of us. By integrating AI tools into our teaching practices, we can offer our students personalized, effective, and engaging ways to improve their writing skills. Let's embark on this journey together, sharing our experiences, strategies, and successes as we explore the potential of AI to make every teacher a champion of writing.

?? The 12 Week Year & AI in Writing Education ??

Let's intertwine the 12-Week Year approach with the progressive SMARTIE goal-setting method. The goal is to meaningfully use AI to enhance our capacity to improve writing skills for all students. In the next 12 weeks, our focus will be on using AI as a tool to not only elevate the general quality and quantity of writing but also to ensure inclusivity and equity in our teaching practices.

By setting SMARTIE goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound, Inclusive, and Equity-focused), we're committing to a teaching approach that goes beyond traditional benchmarks. Our tactics will involve leveraging AI tools for personalized feedback, fostering diverse forms of expression, and adapting our methods to cater to various learning styles. Success in this endeavor means not just observable improvements in writing skills but also making strides in student engagement and empowerment, particularly for those from diverse backgrounds.

Tactics / Action Steps:

  1. Personalized Feedback: Integrating AI tools such as Curipod and SchoolAI to provide individualized and actionable writing feedback to students, catering to their unique learning needs and styles.
  2. Diverse Expression: Encouraging students to explore different genres and styles of writing, using AI to support creativity and expression in ways that resonate with their cultural and personal backgrounds.
  3. Adaptive Teaching Methods: Employing AI analytics to understand student performance and adapt our teaching methods accordingly, ensuring that all students, especially those from underserved populations, receive the support they need.
  4. MTSS Referrals: Utilizing insights to identify students who may benefit from additional support and making targeted MTSS referrals. This ensures that interventions are timely and tailored, addressing the full range of academic and behavioral needs.
  5. Continuous Monitoring and Adjustment: Regularly reviewing data on student progress to make real-time adjustments in teaching strategies, ensuring that our approach remains effective, inclusive, and equitable.
  6. Student-Initiated Interactions with AI Tools: Active involvement of students in using AI tools for their writing assignments. This includes seeking feedback, revising their work based on AI suggestions, and independently exploring the features of these tools. Such actions demonstrate a shift towards self-directed learning and indicate a deeper engagement with the writing process. Monitoring how students take initiative in utilizing AI tools will give us early insights into their growing confidence and proficiency in writing.

By embracing these tactics, we are not only enhancing academic performance but also building a more inclusive, supportive, and equitable learning environment. As we move through these 12 weeks, our focus remains steadfast on using AI writing education in a way that is inclusive and equitable, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive and express themselves effectively.

Indicators

As we embark on our 12-week journey to integrate AI in writing education, it’s crucial to distinguish between leading and lagging indicators. Leading indicators are predictive measures that give us early signals of progress while lagging indicators provide a retrospective view of what we've accomplished. Here's how we can define them for our initiative:

Leading Indicators:

  1. Engagement with AI Tools: Early adoption and regular use of AI tools. This indicates the integration of these tools into daily teaching and learning practices and sets the stage for success. As students become more comfortable with these tools, we expect to see a ripple effect in the form of enhanced writing skills, greater creativity, and more critical thinking in student work. The active use of these tools in the early stages will be pivotal in shaping the success of our 12-week journey, providing a solid basis for achieving our larger educational goals
  2. Participation in Professional Development: Seek workshops and teacher communities related to AI in writing education.
  3. Frequency of AI-Assisted Feedback: The regularity with which students receive personalized feedback from AI tools, demonstrating an ongoing process of writing improvement.
  4. Initial Student Feedback: Early responses from students about their experience and challenges with AI tools in writing tasks. This provides immediate insights into student engagement and areas for adjustment.

Lagging Indicators:

  1. Improvement in Writing Quality: Measurable enhancements in students' writing skills over the 12 weeks, as evidenced by AI tool analytics and teacher assessments.
  2. Student Performance Metrics: Changes in student writing performance, including grades or scores, particularly among those previously struggling or from underserved backgrounds.
  3. Teacher Observations and Reflections: Feedback from teachers in other content areas at the end of the 12 weeks related to improved student writing.
  4. Student Self-Assessment and Reflection: Students’ evaluations of their progress in writing skills and their overall experience with AI tools at the end of the period.
  5. Student Engagement with Authentic Audiences: Instances where students have presented or published their writing to an authentic audience, such as school newsletters, local community events, blogs, or student-led conferences. This indicator reflects the students' confidence in their writing abilities and their skill in communicating effectively to a real-world audience.

By tracking both leading and lagging indicators, we can gain a comprehensive view of our initiative's impact. Leading indicators will help us make real-time adjustments while lagging indicators will provide a clear picture of our achievements and areas for further improvement.

Teaching Tip of the Week

Choose the Right AI Tool: Start by selecting an AI tool that aligns with your students' age and writing level, such as Curipod or SchoolAI.

AI Guidance and Prompting: Input elements of your rubric into the AI tool to recognize and evaluate these criteria in student writing. This step is crucial to ensure that the AI's feedback is relevant and aligned with your objectives.

Demonstrate and Educate: Introduce the tool to your students with a clear demonstration. Explain how it analyzes writing and provides feedback. This helps in demystifying the tool and making students comfortable with it.

Embed in Writing Assignments: Incorporate the use of AI feedback into regular writing assignments. Encourage students to submit drafts to the AI tool, review the feedback, and make revisions based on the suggestions.

Encourage Reflection: After students revise their work using AI feedback, ask them to reflect on the changes they made. This reflection can be in the form of a short written piece or a class discussion. It helps students internalize the feedback and understand its impact on their writing.
