Every Problem I’ve Ever Had Was Solved Through a Book

Every problem I’ve ever faced in my life was solved through a book. Whenever I felt stuck, there was a book for that. When I wanted to improve my content, there was a book for that too. When I didn’t know where to go next in my business, there was always a book to guide me. Even in those moments when I just wanted to escape, yep, there was a book for that as well. And that last one—don’t judge me—my wife got me into it. The truth is, every single problem we face can be solved with the right book.

The Value of Books

People we would normally spend tens of thousands, if not millions, of dollars on to mentor us are writing books, and they’re dropping wisdom in each one. I didn’t realize this until I was almost 30. Growing up, I hated reading books. In school, we had book clubs, but I never read the books. I’d skim the cliff notes and make up the rest. Funny enough, I was usually close enough to get a passing grade. In college, it was the same story. I skimmed through books just to pass, never really reading them.

Everything changed when I got my first “big boy” job. I had a mentor who saw something in me and wanted me to become a leader. He gave me my first book that I actually read and learned from: Sell Like Crazy by Grant Cardone. Funny enough, I don’t like that book much today, but at the time, it changed everything for me. It gave me a new perspective on sales and work. This led me to the next book I chose myself: Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink. This book single-handedly changed my view on leadership and life, setting me on a path to success.

Making the Most of Books

But here’s the catch: if you don’t have a good framework for capturing and making the most out of the books you read, they’re as good as the paper they’re printed on. I realized this and changed the way I read to get the most out of every book. I started by writing out quotes that resonated with me, word for word. This helped the words stick with me more.

Next, I asked myself three questions about the quotes:

1. How does this impact my life?

2. Who else could benefit from this?

3. If I had to teach it, how would I do it?

Answering these questions helped me connect deeply with the material, understand it better, and share the wisdom with others. The best way to learn something is to teach it, and by doing so, I retained and applied the knowledge more effectively.

The Cheat Code to Success

The cheat code to success is exposure. The more we’re exposed to new ideas, people, and concepts, the more likely we are to find success. Books provide that exposure, especially when we lack the right people around us. You can pick up a book by your favorite author or someone you want to emulate and gain valuable insights and frameworks that can change your life.

Whenever I feel down or unmotivated, I pick up a book by someone I admire. It’s almost like I start to think like that author for a while, giving me the momentum to take action and change my life. This might not work for everyone, but I promise that if you spend time getting the most out of what you read, it can be transformative.

So, next time you face a problem, consider picking up a book. It might just have the solution you need. And as always, I appreciate you taking the time to read this. Let me know in the comments how you get the most out of what you read. Until next time!
