Not every path you go down works out

But each and every path provides an opportunity to learn and gain insights. It is that way in work projects, new client business development and in sourcing for people requirements. And so it was for me yesterday when, having worked on a two projects on a quiet Sunday, I decided to go outside and burn off some 'steam' and 'calories'. I am on a client project site in the #SouthofFrance for the month of june and from my room I have a nice view of a steep tree covered hillside. As I work in the early mornings I sit in my chair and look out over this hill. For the past couple of days I have seen some hawks land in the top of the tree about 70 meters up (vertical) and so I thought I would try to go look closer. (In fact as I type this post a hawk just took off from the that tree).

For the past two weeks, to add variety to the available gym routine - bike & treadmill, I have gone out looking for walking and hiking routes nearby. So I have gone up and over this hill via a nearby road (hard incline even via this road) and then through the groves of trees via paved tractor and vehicle paths of an agricultural exploitation. So I figured that once I got up above 'that' tree that I could locate a cleared path. Plus from my 'window' view the lay of the land looked doable. However the actual hike became more of a scramble. The hill was steeper than it looks and the knee high and head high brush, brambles and shrubs were much more formidable challenges. After 90 minutes of heavy breathing and trying to find a way up the hill, through brush, around brush, finding 'sanglier' (wild boar) paths I'm not sure how close I got to my destination. So I turned around and worked my way back down. Hence the headline photo of my hiking battle scars. My lower legs took quite a beating.

Sometimes our work efforts feel a bit like yesterday; you take the #lesstraveled route, or you make up your own path and you just don't get the outcome you want, or had planned for. Now sometimes, digging down or searching in an unfamiliar territory brings great opportunity. Other times not so much. But what do you learn? What are your #takeaways? My big lesson of yesterday was, I should have been better equipped (long pants, gloves and hiking poles) and I probably should have given up the #quest a bit earlier in the game. But in the end I got the exercise and #workout I was looking for and came back with a few more scrapes and bruises and some good memories.

We never lose, we learn or we succed. Here, you had a little bit of both.
