I feel bad for those who are new to SEO and every other "Guru" mislead them and teach wrong or shortcut ways to earn money by ranking sites.
These newbies are directed to illegal and low quality niches/businesses mostly where spam works like a charm and they feel themselves "PRO", while they're actually ruining their future for some quick bucks.
Obviously I can't teach everyone individually what's wrong with their concepts, so I planned to share some of the most common misconceptions about SEO among newbies.

1: Metrics. DA, PA, TF, CF (Stressing it on again, people are used to of such stuff).
I feel pity when I see people buying or selling domains and links based on metrics including DA, PA, TF, CF and others.
Google is a separate entity than Moz, Majestic Ahrefs and other companies/tools. One can have an idea about a site's quality and power but can't solely rely on these metrics.
Google's rankings have nothing to do with these metrics.
So, what to check then?
Of course, BACK LINKS' quality.
Back links help in ranking sites, so you should check quality of those links instead of metrics of domains. In the next heading, I'll brief about authority and other links.
Difference between links from authorities and web 2.0 sites
Not every back link from high metrics site can rank your keywords magically, yeah they can give you some boost but true authority is something else.
I know the question that arises in your mind is "What kind of sites are better to get links?"
The answer is "Ones that are not available to everyone" If everyone is allowed to create account and add a link to their site without any approval process, then such links aren't authority links.
These kind of links are easy to get so Google knows that it's a web 2.0 link and every spammy site has a link from it.
There's a hell lots of difference between a link from webmd.com and wn.com, while the metrics of both domains are high but the power is different.
Quick Tip: It's not that hard to manipulate these metrics, just pick sites that have mostly comment/web 2.0 type links and their DA should be high, just make back links on the same pages for your domain, Therese high chances that your DA will be increased soon. This is how people are selling links from DA50+ spammed sites, Moz loves spam.
2: How to know if a site is authority or not?
I normally check if there's signup option available or not, if it's available, then signup and check yourself if you can post any link without approval.
If their approval process is hard, then chances are more that the quality of link will be better.
3: Whitehat vs Blackhat
What if I tell you that you all are black hat or grey hat? Yes, if you're building even a single link to your site, you're black hat in eyes of Google. And, in recent Google Algorithm updates you might also have seen SEOs screaming about penalties, regardless they were white, black or grey hats.
SEO is SEO, there is no hat, everyone have their own way to rank a keyword, it's about short term(Spam) or long term(Quality).
Google is a business entity, it works for profits not for claps, it doesn't matter for them if a site gets penalized or boost in SERPs, they just keep improving their SERPs and ultimate goal is money.
There are enough quality sites in Google's database to fill page 1 and to meet searcher's query, if you're proud white hat then you should wait for the day when Google will love you and give you page 1 rankings. If you still think that Google care for you then read the below statement to believe.
WE TELL LOTS OF THINGS TO DO. IMPROVE SITE SPEED. CONSIDER SECURE. ETC. BUT THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS UPDATE WAS ABOUT. IT'S BROAD. AND RESPECTFULLY, I THINK TELLING PEOPLE THERE'S NO PARTICULAR THING TO "FIX" IS INDEED HELPFUL. IT MEANS, HOPEFULLY, THEY THINK MORE BROADLY...
So, I'd recommend to focus on long term strategies and also do short term churn and burn stuff to learn more quickly about SEO. Your testing and experiments are the best teacher for you.
