Every job seeker must do 3 things
Job search ka hai simple funda, Apply, Apply aur Apply!
(Jobsearch has a simple strategy, Apply, Apply and Apply!)
Amir Syed, Job Coach at Destination CEO, loves to say; “Be a scientist about it”, i.e. if you have applied for 20-25 jobs and have received no traction, stop, tweak and re-apply.
Many people talk about the “Hidden Job Market”.?In today’s world, when literally everything is online, are jobs are not really going to be posted online?
Most jobs are posted, maybe on platforms or websites, we do not often check.?However, with metacrawlers like Indeed, these show up there too.
The challenge with jobs, when they show up on platforms like Indeed, the employer receives 1000’s of resumes, many of which are not relevant.
Here is when it gets a little frustrating for many employers, and they prefer to first review applications which they have received from their own websites or posts, such as LinkedIn.?However, that does not mean that when you apply through Indeed, you do not get a response.?Infact, Indeed is one of the most popular jobsearch sites currently.
Sometimes though, people leave projects mid-way or tragedy happens and employers need a quick replacement, or the company is small or a startup, and do not have a recruitment department set up.?This is when they put the word out to their network or current employees for referrals.?These jobs could also be posted, but perhaps on a personal Twitter handle, or a LinkedIn post.?This is why we like, support, love or share such posts, I know I do, and tag people within our networks, so they can apply to those.
Please note, that many Recruiters and Hiring Managers, actually review each and every resume they receive.?Now, if the resume is NOT relevant to the position, this is when they get put into the reject pile.?This is the primary reason, most coaches will ask you to customize your resume with the relevant keywords and accomplishments, not really for ATS (2021 has changed a lot of things!).
The easy way around this is to have a focused resume with the relevant keywords and accomplishments to the roles you are targeting.?This way, your actual resume-customization time is limited to minutes, vs. hours.
Please let’s stop over-analyzing jobsearch.
Every job seeker must do 3 things, every day, whilst jobsearching:
Apply & Easy Apply for relevant jobs
Connect with people in companies they wish to work for and build their relevant network
Be visible on professional platforms like LinkedIn (considering a high volume of recruitment happens here)
Please do NOT listen to naysayers and those who, unless it is a regulated career, tell you that you do not have Canadian Experience / Education – do you know that it is illegal in Canada to reject a candidate based on lack of Canadian experience?
Ask yourself:
Do you want that job?
Do you have the skills to do the job?
Can you do the job, based on your current skill set?
If the answer is yes, then please apply.?Do NOT overthink it!?Let the rejections come, reach back and ask for feedback.?Not everyone will give it to you, no worries.?Move on.?However, when someone does give you constructive feedback, reflect on it and if it resonates, great.?If not, move on to the next!
Most of all, please please please stay away from negativity.?
Jobsearch is already a lonely journey.?We really should not associate with anything negative and these are people who enjoy bringing us down, who have a problem for solution and who love to generate fear amongst us.
Make jobsearch a soul searching professional experience.?Focus on your strengths, speak to more and more people but only listen to the good they have to share, learn from their experiences and not the fears or problems.?Critically think about each situation. “Can I do the job, based on my current skill set, regardless of the feedback I just received?”?
Build a network of people who make you feel good about yourself, not make you look at the holes in your profile.?We are all unique and there is a place for all of us.?Believe in yourself and focus on your behavior, and just like you made it to this post, you will make it to your goal, because YOU are the CEO of YOUR Destiny, not them.?And, if you need a confidence boost, speak to any of our @Destination CEO Participants or watch their testimony on our YouTube Channel, and you will feel re-energized!
Fun Fact: Many of the postgrad students in my current Humber College cohort, found employment, only by optimizing their LinkedIn Profile, with a median salary range of $75-85K, without Canadian Experience.
