Every cloud has a silver lining: Poetry

In turbulent times and in times of crisis it is not only fear and despair that rises, but also creativity, innovation, and poetry. Aristoteles allegedly said, "Poetry is finer and more philosophical than history; for poetry expresses the universal, and history only the particular".

Also this time, people turn to poetry to express their feelings, fear, and hope. Personally I love to read poetry as I imagine it gives a glimpse into the mind/soul of another person; how the world is seen, felt and experienced by another person. 

It also feeds the imagination with how to make better use of words, learn new words and express your self with more nuances - for our thoughts are much more nuanced than what our words tend to let others believe.

So we are entering a period where people will create mind-blowing innovations as well as write and sing beautiful compositions of words. Some will speak right to your heart and leave you wondering how they could know what you were feeling? How many out there are feeling the same way?

As an example, my teacher from the university shared this poem which I find is a good example of what I think Aristoteles referred to;

And the people stayed home.

And read books, and listened, and rested,

and exercised, and made art, and played games,

and learned new ways of being, and were still.

And listened more deeply.

Some meditated, some prayed, some danced.

Some met their shadows.

And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed.


And, in the absence of people living in ignorant,

dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways,

the earth began to heal.


And when the danger passed,

and the people joined together again,

they grieved their losses,

and made new choices,

and dreamed new images,

and created new ways to live

and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.
