Every cloud has a silver lining

Every cloud has a silver lining

The expression goes that "every cloud has a silver lining" - even the worst situations have some positive aspects. We are now going through uncertain times and it's key to focus on the positive and stay creative. As such, to push through some good news in the flow of bad news; I will dedicate my articles to the silver lining of the COVID-19 situation.

Growing up by the Swedish west coast I could observe ever since I was a child how sea life has changed throughout my lifetime - less fish, more frequent algae bloomings, etc - I have always been keen to care for the environment.

So when I read that the water is now clear in the canals of Venice and as such, swans, fish and dolphins have returned to Venice for the first time in decades since the city has been locked down to visitors - it brought a big smile to my face! I mean, who can resist smiling when dolphins show up?

And... it took just 2 weeks! It's not such a long time compared to how many decades it's been impossible for these animals to live there.

Italy has discussed for a long time if and how drastically they should limit the number of visitors in Venice to protect the city and its environment (similar to what Peru does to protect the environment surrounding the Inka Trail). Perhaps this will add data and encouragement to make it happen to the joy of the citizens, animals and even the visitors who will get to enjoy the magical city properly.

You can read and see videos of the clear water, returning swans, fishes and dolphins here. Enjoy!
