EVERY BUSINESS WITH A WEBSITE SHOULD READ THIS....

In February this year (2016) Google made a fairly small blog announcement that could have had large implications for sites that aren’t mobile friendly.

The significant message was this:

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

Now the fact that any changes to Googles algorithm is “a big thing” in the SEO world coupled with the fact that Google very rarely gives advanced warning has people predicting the end of the world for none mobile friendly sites.

What actually happened?

Well according to Moz.com, there was an increase of mobile friendly pages in mobile search results from 70% to 72% - hardly earth shattering, but it does raise some interesting points:

1. Firstly, this is only the start of the suite of changes google are making to mobile search, in 2015 we saw mobile searches outstrip desktop searches and that trend will only continue. If your site isn’t mobile responsive, it will have an increasingly negative effect on your ranking when people search on a mobile device.

2. Secondly, have you tried to use a desktop only site on a mobile? It’s frustrating, all that zooming and pinching and squinting, also mobile searchers are fickle, if you make things difficult for them to find information, they will go somewhere else.

What do I need to do?

If you don’t know if you’re site is responsive, Google have provided a handy check

A timely reminder. It's funny how Google announces some changes with major announcements that have little impact (like mobilegeddon) and then slip out the really significant stuff half hidden in blogs! At least in this case it's a very predictable move and only catching up with established user trends. So when businesses see their mobile traffic decline they'll know what to do.
