In an era where personal data has become a powerful commodity, I created a Latin phrase caveat productum—a caution to "let the product beware"—serves as a prescient reminder to individuals, including clinical trial participants, whose data has become the product, to be vigilant in protecting their privacy. Anonymizing or "blinding" patient identities in clinical research has long been a cornerstone of ethical study design, intended to shield participants from unwanted exposure or bias. However, the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and access to vast, commercially available datasets—like smartphone location and transaction histories—creates the potential to circumvent these privacy protections. Here I examine the heightened risks to patient anonymity in clinical research posed by new data sources and analysis techniques. It also explores the need for regulatory actions, expanded vigilance from Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), and practical steps individuals can take to maintain control over their personal data.

The Traditional Practice of Patient Blinding in Clinical Research

Blinding patient identities is a fundamental practice in clinical research, ensuring that participants' personal details are protected and their involvement remains confidential. This process involves removing identifying information from datasets, assigning randomized identifiers, and restricting access to personal details. Such precautions are critical in upholding trust, encouraging participation, and maintaining the scientific integrity of studies by reducing potential biases.
