Everest Base Camp with My Little Sherpas: A Mom's Tale of Thin Air and Thick Lessons
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but trust me, even a thousand pictures wouldn't capture the whirlwind of emotions, the jaw-dropping scenery, and the unexpected lessons learned on our recent trek to Everest Base Camp with my 6 and 9-year-old adventurers. This one was for me – a lifelong dream checked off the bucket list! The kids were bouncing off the walls with excitement – a new culture, a place tied to their heritage, and the promise of delicious momos (definitely more enticing than yak cheese pizza!).
Of course, we knew it wouldn't be a walk in the park (literally, the altitude made every mile feel like a marathon!). The air grew thin, the miles stretched longer with each step, and the last two days were a test of endurance with temperatures dipping to a bone-chilling -15°C. There were moments, especially on the descent from Base Camp, when those little legs seemed ready to give in. But here's the thing they surprised the heck out of me with: they didn't. They dug deep, they cheered each other on, and their sheer determination became an inspiration for everyone on the trail.
This trip became so much more than just reaching Base Camp. It became a crash course in leadership, resilience, and the most unexpected teacher of all – my own kids.
Lesson #1: Believe in Their Everest (Because They Can Climb It)
We all have a tendency to underestimate what our kids (and ourselves!) are capable of. This trek was a constant reminder of the power of unwavering belief. When the doubts crept in and the oxygen thinned, a simple "You've got this, sweetie!" or "Just imagine the amazing view from the next teahouse (and maybe a plate of steaming hot momos!)" made all the difference. It fueled their fire and got them moving again. It turns out, sometimes all it takes is a little nudge in the right direction, a reminder of the incredible summit (or delicious lunch) that awaits.
Lesson #2: Lead by Example – Even When You're Panting
Kids are like sponges, soaking up everything we do and say. Seeing us push through the fatigue, celebrate every milestone (no matter how small – conquering a particularly steep incline or mastering the art of yak dung avoidance!), and support each other was a powerful message in itself. It showed them the importance of perseverance, the joy of shared accomplishment, and the strength that comes from unity. Just like how they kept reminding each other about the next fun activity on the hike, sometimes leading by example means reminding ourselves (and them) of the bigger picture, the exciting reward waiting for us at the end of the climb.

Lesson #3: Gamify the Journey (Because Who Doesn't Love a Good Challenge?)
As any seasoned adventurer (or parent) knows, things rarely go according to plan. We battled coughs, the occasional bout of altitude sickness, and a healthy dose of "missing home" blues. But instead of letting it derail us, we took a page out of their playbook and gamified the journey. Remember how kids can walk for miles without complaining if they're on a scavenger hunt or have a competition going with a sibling? We adopted the same tactic. We invented silly games to make time fly by, raced each other to the next teahouse (safely, of course!), and even turned spotting yaks into a point system. It was a masterclass in keeping things fun, fostering a sense of accomplishment, and reminding them (and ourselves) that even the toughest challenges can be overcome with a little creativity and a playful spirit.
Exhausted, Exhilarated, and a Whole Lot Closer
We returned home with weary legs, windblown faces, and hearts overflowing with a newfound connection. Sure, they missed a bit of school, but they gained so much more – the knowledge that they can overcome challenges, the power of teamwork, and the belief that they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
This wasn't just a trek to Everest Base Camp; it was a trek through our own limitations, a journey of self-discovery for the whole family. And as we look back at the photos (a thousand words each, after all!), we're reminded that the most rewarding souvenirs aren't physical – they're the memories we made, the bonds we strengthened, and the limitless potential we unearthed, together.

THIS IS AMAZING! I'd love to connect on this, me and my little dude travel and camp extensively and I NEVER considered Everest base camp. Kids are amazing and so many grown-ups doubt what they can do!
