Ever wondered what a Technical Writer does at Ocado Technology?

As a Technical Writer, what is your role at Ocado Technology Barcelona?

I, along with two other technical writers in Barcelona create and maintain the help documentation for our Ocado Smart Platform. That includes user and feature guides, as well as developer documentation. We also write and send release notes for all capabilities created by the product teams and work with UX designers on writing copy for the retailer partner-facing OSP user interfaces.?

What are some of the challenges you tackle every day?

As we support several teams, I do have to switch my thinking caps quite frequently during the day. One minute, I might be working on API documentation; the next I might be reviewing copy for a UI design. And of course, it’s always a race against the clock.

What achievements make you feel proud?

I’m proud that we have met most of our deadlines! Technical documentation is usually an ‘unknown’ element in many companies. Here, through our frequent communication with the teams, they now understand the importance of documentation and try to get us involved in the product development process at the earliest stage possible. Our team’s visibility has been improved, and the feedback has all been positive so far.

What do you enjoy the most about working at Ocado Technology?

I have a great team that is very supportive. The flexibility of being able to work from home several days a week but also coming into the office on some days and meeting colleagues creates a great balance. The people here are super-friendly, and the Thursday brunch has been something I look forward to every week.

What are the highlights of your career here, so far?

The biggest highlight so far has been my visit to Hatfield in October 2022 where I had the opportunity to visit a Customer Fulfilment Centre (CFC) and a Spoke. I also had the opportunity to spend a few hours with a driver doing his deliveries. Also, being the Barcelona Works Council representative for the past two years has given me an opportunity to meet lots of people I don’t usually interact with in the course of my daily work.

Tell us some fun things about yourself

I tried playing football for the Ocado team in a recent tournament but ended up being the coach/motivator as it’s getting difficult playing with the young ‘uns! I also sing in a rock ‘n’ roll band!
