Conscientiousness (C-Style) is one of four behavioral toolkits in the DISC Model for classifying how we respond to life’s unfolding events. Our choice of nuanced behaviors across the toolkits reflects our mindset, world view, or philosophy.
The C-Style behavioral toolkit contains actions that serve as a compass for us, our teams, and our organizations. The compass gives us the undiluted facts as to where we are and the direction in which we are headed. Like the other DISC toolkits, The C-Style is important and must be adopted in certain circumstances.
Appreciating and adopting C-Style behavior requires we take the compass analogy on board. The information is the same regardless of who holds the compass and the circumstances under which it is being read.
Individuals who prefer the C-Style endure a lot of criticism for what is deemed to be a preference for a data and evidence-driven approach as against a people-first philosophy.
The task in this Success with People Newsletter and the companion Live Cast is to expose some carefully concealed C-Style mindset considerations to deepen your understanding, appreciation, and ability to adopt C-Style behavior as necessary.
Mindset adjustments
To manifest C-Style behavior from your own style, consider these mindset adjustments:
1.???? Prioritize Accuracy and Precision
The C-Style values attention to detail, thoroughness, and error avoidance. Double-check! Delete! Cheque again! (haha. Gotcha)
2.???? Embrace Critical Thinking
Cultivate critical thinking skills and a methodical approach to problem-solving. The C-Style mindset embraces logical reasoning and well-researched solutions.
3.???? Value Data and Information
Recognize the importance of data and information in decision-making.
4.???? Apply Systems and Structure
Develop systems to facilitate productivity and use a structured approach, including careful planning, to achieve objectives. Well-designed, step-by-step processes minimize human error and other risks.
5.???? Champion Compliance
Reflect on how many mishaps are a result of faulty systems as against a failure to comply with clearly documented procedures.
C-Style Conducive Environments
C-Style behavior thrives when these factors are in place:
1.?Consistency. Plans are in place and are only amended after due evidence-driven review.
2.?Quality Answers. There is a culture that encourages tough questioning and solid responses.
3.?Clear expectations. Roles are defined. Processes are documented. Timelines are agreed.
4.?Accuracy. Get it right, every time!
5.?Value adding. Activities, processes, and operations add value and are carefully monitored.
6.?Compliance. Guidelines and procedures are followed, and accountability is embraced.
7.?Standards. Appropriate standards are established and rigorously maintained.
Mindsets in the C-Style Toolkit
Competence
The C-Style mindset deems competence to be a good fit to go along with logical, systematic thinking and an error-avoidance mentality.
Risk aversion
If there is not enough time or resources to get it right the first time, where will they come from to deal with the fallout AND then do it over? Care and caution are watchwords. Being correct is helpful.

Curiosity
A quest for information is part of the C-Style behavioral DNA. The incessant “Why” of children is not far from the adult questioning mindset.
Compliance
What is the point of rules if they are not enforced?? Life without rules would be anarchy. Accountability without fear or favor is in the interest of the common good.
Critical Thinking
In an era of fake news and unsubstantiated reporting, the C-Style embrace of Critical Thinking is a plus.
Cool
The C-Style mindset approaches relationships cautiously and with an air of pragmatism. “Your closest friends define who you are.” Since relationships are complex and individuals can change their minds without notice, it makes sense to enter relationships guardedly and protect one’s privacy.
Potential Disrupters
Feedback
Your C-Style colleague might not respond favorably to critical feedback. Strangely, the discomfort is more likely to be with themselves since they pride themselves on being careful and competent. Whatever you do, make sure that you are accurate and that you have supporting evidence.
Gray Areas
One of the biggest challenges in appreciating the C-Style mindset is the issue of ambiguity and nuances. There is a discomfort with leaving things up in the air. Black and white or 1234 works fine. Pregnant or not pregnant??
The gray areas are difficult. Nuances are hard to handle.
“Yes, but…”
Well, is it Yes or No?
“Yes, but…”
Bottom Line
The ability to adopt tools from each of the four DISC toolkits is a mark of Emotional and Social Intelligence. Access information on the previous three styles from the Newsletter tab in my LinkedIn profile: https://www.dhirubhai.net/in/productivityimprovement/
