Ever wondered how basic calculations could revolutionize your business strategy? Here's how my team used simple math to dominate the UK monitor market

Math used to make me break out in a cold sweat. Numbers were my nemesis all through school. But life has a funny way of turning things around – now, I'm singing math's praises as a powerful ally in the business world specially when am learning Advanced analytics.
Let me share a real-world example of how even basic stats can make a huge difference.
?A few years back, my team and I faced a daunting challenge: significantly boost Dell's monitor market share in the UK. Our goal? A whopping 45% of the market. It seemed like scaling Mount Everest in flip-flops. If only I'd known about the Poisson experiment back then – it could've made our journey a lot smoother!
?So, what's this Poisson thing? Don't worry, it's not as scary as it sounds. Imagine you're trying to guess how many customers might walk into your store in an hour. The Poisson experiment helps predict that, based on your average foot traffic. Cool, right?
?Now, let's apply this to our market share challenge:
1. We started with our current share (let's say it was "pretty good, but not great")
2. We knew our ambitious target: 45%
3. The Poisson experiment could've helped us figure out:
?? - How likely we were to hit 45% with our current strategy
?? - What tweaks might increase our chances
?For example, let's say we typically sold 1000 monitors a month. The Poisson experiment could help us calculate the probability of selling 1200, 1500, or even 2000 monitors – and what it would take to make those jumps.

?Armed with this info, we could've made smarter decisions about where to focus our efforts. Should we push harder in certain regions? Target specific customer segments? Adjust our pricing?
?Even without knowing about Poisson back then, my team and I with the support of our leader and marketing team did something similar instinctively. We broke down our big goal into smaller, achievable targets. We collaborated closely with regional teams, aligned everyone to our vision, and charged forward together.
?The result? We hit that 45% target! It was one of my proudest moments as a sales leader.
?Now, imagine if we'd had the Poisson experiment in our toolkit from the start. We could've:
- Predicted our chances of success more accurately
- Identified the most promising strategies faster
- Adjusted our approach in real-time based on data
?The best part? You don't need to be a math whiz to use these tools. Simple stats can give you a huge edge in business. They help you make smarter decisions, set realistic goals, and find the best path to success.
"The Poisson experiment helps us predict how often an event might happen based on how often it usually happens. In our case, we used it to estimate how many monitors we might sell in a given period, which helped us plan our strategy to reach that 45% market share." You can easily find the Poisson formula online.
So, to all my fellow former math-phobes out there – don't let numbers scare you! Embrace them as powerful allies in your professional journey. Who knows? They might just help you conquer your own market!
