2. Featured Article

The relationships you NEED to get to the top emphasises the importance of building and nurturing specific relationships in the workplace to achieve career success. The central premise is that while knowledge and skills matter, having the right connections and advocates can significantly impact your career progression. The article identifies five types of relationships, highlighting the critical role of a sponsor in your career and provides advice on how to gain one.

4 Actionable Takeaways:

  1. Identify a potential sponsor who has influence, exposure to your work, and the power to make things happen.
  2. Deliver on your performance by going above and beyond expectations to attract attention and build your reputation.
  3. Make the ask for sponsorship in person, highlighting your achievements and expressing your interest in getting promoted.
  4. If declined, understand that it may be due to lack of exposure to your work, lack of power, or personal reasons, NOT because of you or your work.

  1. Which single skill would you suggest everyone prioritise for development?

Communication. Mastering the art of communication enabled me to convey my ideas clearly, collaborate seamlessly, resolve conflicts and build meaningful relationships. Understand your audience, adapt your communication to them and always ask for feedback where possible.

  1. What significant challenge have you faced in your journey and how did you overcome it?

Transitioning into a leadership role. I always had the ambition to take on a leadership role. But this was one of my most pivotal challenges as it required me to take my mindset and skill set to the next level. To overcome it, I actively sought mentorship from experienced leaders, read extensively on leadership principles, and was invited to undertake leadership training programs.

  1. Do you have a valuable piece of advice to share?

Embrace a growth mindset. A lifelong learner, I believe abilities and intelligence can be developed through continuous learning and hard work. Cultivating a growth mindset not only fuelled personal growth but also empowered me to face challenges with resilience and creativity. Challenges should be seen as opportunities for growth, and setbacks or “failures” viewed as learning experiences.

4. Diversity Matters

Unconscious Bias shapes the entire job landscape. Unconscious Bias refers to the hidden judgments formed unintentionally about others based on factors like race, gender, and age. These biases influence decision-making without realisation. When you're job hunting unconscious bias assumes a pivotal role in shaping how potential employers perceive you and your skills. Preconceived notions can lead to misunderstandings, making it harder for you to get noticed by employers. These biases might even lead to job opportunities being given to candidates who fit a certain mould, even though you're the better candidate.

Strategies to counter Unconscious Bias:

  1. Showcase Your Skills: Focus on highlighting your skills, qualifications, and experiences relevant to the job. Make sure your application and CV reflect your capabilities clearly.
  2. Expand Your Network: Connecting with people from various backgrounds and industries opens doors to opportunities that might not be influenced by unconscious bias.
  3. Prepare for Interviews: Practice your interview skills and responses to common questions. This can help you confidently convey your abilities, minimising the potential impact of biases.
  4. Embrace Your Identity: These can be valuable assets setting you apart from others and contributing to the diversity that many organisations seek.
  5. Stay Persistent: Continue improving your skills and keep applying to roles. Research and target companies that have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. They’re more likely to have fairer hiring practices and provide opportunities for diverse candidates.

5. Key Strategies?

LinkedIn. Powerful. Recognised. Invaluable. How can LinkedIn help you?

  1. Professional Networking: Connect with colleagues, mentors, and industry leaders worldwide. Building a robust network opens doors to valuable insights, job opportunities, and collaborations. It’s particularly beneficial if you are just starting and may not have an extensive professional network.
  2. Personal Branding: Create a compelling professional profile, showcasing your skills, accomplishments, and aspirations. This is vital in shaping a strong personal brand.
  3. Job Search: The algorithm suggests jobs that align with your skills and career goals. Employers often use the platform to find potential candidates.
  4. Learning and Development: Through LinkedIn Learning, you can access courses on various topics enhancing your skills and knowledge, improving your employability.
  5. Content Sharing: You can and should share articles, posts, and updates, positioning yourself as thought leaders in your respective fields. Start doing this as early as possible.

6. Book Club

7. And so... How do top-tier executives make it to the top?

It’s usually one of two things. Privilege or a mix of the right factors. Focusing on the latter, as effortless as it may seem, it never is. The 3 factors each individual should focus on are building relationships with the right people, proactively learning or upskilling, and having a focused, actionable plan with goals that can be adapted to unplanned circumstances over time.
