The Ever-Increasing Cost of Super Bowl Ads

The Ever-Increasing Cost of Super Bowl Ads

The Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the world, and it's no wonder that companies are willing to pay top dollar for a commercial spot during the game. In 1967, a 30-second ad cost just $42,500. But today, the cost is a staggering $7 million.

This year, CBS told Variety that they are already "virtually sold out" for the game. That means that advertisers are spending over $500 million on ad revenue for this year's Super Bowl alone.

Here is a table of the cost of a 30-second Super Bowl ad over the years:

1967: $42,500

1970: $78,000

1975: $107,000

1980: $222,000

1985: $525,000

1990: $700,000

1995: $1.2 million

2000: $2 million

2005: $2.4 million

2010: $3 million

2015: $4.25 million

2020: $5.6 million

2024: $7 million

So why are companies willing to pay so much for a Super Bowl ad? There are a few reasons.

  • The Super Bowl is a massive television event. It's watched by over 100 million people in the United States alone. That's a huge audience for any advertiser.
  • The Super Bowl is a great opportunity to launch a new product or campaign. The game is so popular that it's sure to generate a lot of buzz for any new ad.
  • Super Bowl ads can be very effective in building brand awareness. A well-crafted ad can stay with people for years to come.

Of course, not all companies can afford to pay $7 million for a Super Bowl ad. But for those who can, it can be a very worthwhile investment.
