The Super Bowl is one of the most watched sporting events in the world, and it's no wonder that companies are willing to pay top dollar for a commercial spot during the game. In 1967, a 30-second ad cost just $42,500. But today, the cost is a staggering $7 million.

This year, CBS told Variety that they are already "virtually sold out" for the game. That means that advertisers are spending over $500 million on ad revenue for this year's Super Bowl alone.
Here is a table of the cost of a 30-second Super Bowl ad over the years:
1967: $42,500
1970: $78,000
1975: $107,000
1980: $222,000
1985: $525,000
1990: $700,000
1995: $1.2 million
2000: $2 million
2005: $2.4 million
2010: $3 million
2015: $4.25 million
2020: $5.6 million
2024: $7 million
So why are companies willing to pay so much for a Super Bowl ad? There are a few reasons.
Of course, not all companies can afford to pay $7 million for a Super Bowl ad. But for those who can, it can be a very worthwhile investment.
