Ever been stuck and couldn't see your way out?

I was there for a couple of days earlier this week. Every emotion was raging through my body and I was stuck. A series of events had happened all at once and it simply took me out. Each one of them on their own would have been fine, but the combination of them completely overwhelmed me. Every emotion was in play and I was reacting. Boy was I in a funk!

Ever been there?

The good news is that I knew I was there this time. Awareness allows us to do things different. It's really is a choice. We can sit in it OR get to work getting out of our funk. Sitting in it does not serve you. Much like losing weight, it takes commitment, time and discipline.

The not so good news is that no matter how long you practice mindset, we are humans and we have emotions. It's not an excuse. Life happens. Instead of letting life happen TO us, what does it look like when you decide to take control of your life back and create a life that happens FOR you?

So, how do you pull yourself up and out?

Here's a process to help you get started:

  1. Forgive yourself and give yourself GRACE – this stuff is HARD and it takes practice. When you are “failing”, you are growing. Give yourself a pat on the back for being aware and allow grace and forgiveness in.
  2. Have a set of “go-to” tools that help lift you up. I pulled out every tool that I know and kept at it until the fog lifted. This is what I call the “hard work”. Learning how to coach yourself out of these emotional reactions will set you free. Be prepared!
  3. Feel the feels! Part of the reason we have emotional reactions is because we are trying to suppress the feelings. We shove them down and pretend they are not there. Give yourself a set amount of time to feel the feelings and then commit to rising back up and into your best self ASAP
  4. Get back up and get into committed action. The difference between my history of how I used to handle emotions and how I react today is that I have a process in place to come out of the reaction mode ASAP. This allows me to get into committed action that aligns with my goals and what I want to create.

A few of the notable tools I use include:

  1. Music – what’s your favorite go-to song? Play it loud and proud and dance like no one is watching!
  2. Hot Bubble Bath – a hot bath seriously cures everything! ??
  3. Journal – writing out your feelings and emotions gives you an outlet to LET IT GO
  4. Support – Reach out and ask for support. Who is someone who stands for you? Someone who won’t let you sit in your own BS? Someone who will lift you up and hold you accountable to what you say you really want.

The next time you're stuck, what's your process to coach yourself out of it? Start thinking about this now, so you can be prepared next time "life happens".

Everyone has a dark side and sometimes we let it control us. Pulling us away from our path and inevitably, not seeing an outlet. It must be a constant effort to recognize and internalize the right behavior. Hey never be able to eliminate the Darkside, but we can always be aware of it and control it.

Great article Tina!? At the Exploring What Matters course (on happiness) I facilitated last night we discussed how so often we avoid the feelings/emotions and just want to get back to happy.? Yet, by pushing them aside they creep back in.? Awareness AND allowing ourselves to accept and explore what's behind the emotions give us the ability to move through them.? Be clear on where you are headed, know the tools/resources that help you "get back on track" AND use your "tribe".? ??
