Events This Week (in London)

Two great events are happening this week - sadly, both are happening on the same night so you will have to choose which to go to!

The Art of Physics: Zahaan Bharmal in Conversation with Michael Brooks

Wednesday 20th November 2024 18:30 - 20:00 at Waterstones, London - Gower Street

Can physics change your life? It already has.?

In?The Art of Physics,?Zahaan Bharmal (Senior Director of Strategy for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Google) explains eight ideas from physics that have transformed his view of everyday life and will do the same for you.?

Far from being abstract, he argues, physics can help us answer very human questions, questions like: Why are some relationships unstable, while others last a lifetime? Why does inequality persist? And why do we all make so many irrational decisions??

Drawing on quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, chaos and complexity theory, materials science and more,?The Art of Physics?reveals the hidden, surprising, and sometimes beautiful ways in which physics can help us to make sense of an unpredictable world. Ultimately, it shows how by embracing the paradoxes and uncertainty at the core of physics, we can unlock a deeper understanding of ourselves and our universe.?

'Exceptionally interesting' - Alain de Botton?

'Fascinating ... You'll never again view your own world in quite the same way. A delight to read' -?Ian Stewart

Don't forget to include a copy of The Art of Physics with your ticket. There will be a book signing following the discussion. Join us from 18:00 for a welcome drink!

Zahaan Bharmal read Physics at the University of Oxford. His early career was spent as a policy adviser and speech-writer for the British Government and the World Bank. He studied as a Fulbright Scholar at Stanford University where he earned an MBA. Since graduating, he has worked for Google, based in London and Silicon Valley, and is currently a senior director of strategy.?

Outside work, Zahaan writes about science for The Guardian and has won NASA's Exceptional Public Achievement Medal for services to science communication.

Michael Brooks is a science writer with a PhD in quantum physics. He the author of several books, including 13 Things That Don’t Make Sense: The Most Baffling Scientific Mysteries of Our Time and The Quantum Astrologer’s Handbook, a 2017 Daily Telegraph Book of the Year.

ID8 at Hammersmith, Kindred

Wednesday 20th November 2024 19:00 - 21:30 at Kindred, Hammersmith, London

Join Kindred founder Anna Anderson and guests for an evening of hope, where eight speakers have eight minutes each to tell us about an idea that could change the world.

From Kindred: When today’s dialogue is led by what’s going wrong with the world, we want to platform some of the things that are going right. Kindred’s signature ID8 event is back in November, platforming ideas from eight speakers who all believe in (and work for) a vision for a better tomorrow.

Founded by Anna Anderson, the founder of Kindred, and Chris Anderson, the head of TED, the concept of ID8 is simple. We gather to listen to eight speakers take eight minutes on stage to tell us about an idea that could change the world. Past ID8s have offered us a wide range of incredible ideas from leaders in business, health, art and design, science, tech and social justice. Previous speakers include award winning photographer Misan Harriman, podcaster and author Rory Stewart, artist Hazel Mead, philosopher Alain de Botton, and what3words founder Chris Sheldrick.

The talks will begin from 7pm but you are welcome to join us from 6pm to get settled with food and drink. Once all seats have been taken there is standing room at the back, so make sure you arrive in good time if you’d like a seat. All tickets include a welcome drink on arrival.

When the talks have finished, we always encourage you to stick around, grab some food and drinks and keep the conversation going. You never know who might the in the room! We can’t wait to welcome you back for another ID8 at Kindred.

Speakers on the night include:

Mark Shaw - founder of Studioshaw ?? Duro Oye - Co-Founder of 2020 Levels ?? Laura Harnett - Founder of Seep ?? Russell Robinson - Director of Gamechangers ??? Priscilla Leigh - Psychoaudiologist and Leadership Coach ?? Maxwell Roberts - Psychologist and Cartographer ??? Anna Brading - Founder of Mentora Money ?? Anne-Laure Le Cunff - Founder of Ness Labs ??
