Event Security: Safeguarding Festivals and Gatherings

Security Associates of Coastal Georgia (SACG) plays a pivotal role in supporting order and safety during public gatherings. Thankfully, shocking incidents like the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump's life are rare and practically unprecedented.

There's a large difference between what the Secret Service delivers and what we offer at SACG, yet event security is clearly a major concern we should all think about. In this article, I will highlight effective event security measures, crowd management, and collaboration with Savannah’s important groups to ensure events are safe, secure and protected.

Securing Savannah's World-Class Events

Every year, Savannah comes alive with events like our renowned St. Patrick's Day parade. We also host film production events and many other large gatherings where security is paramount.

At SACG, we understand that the safety and security of guests, performers, and staff are the cornerstones of hosting and running a successful event. Our approach is built on three foundational pillars:

1. Proactive risk assessment

2. Low-event crowd management

3. Seamless collaboration with businesses and partners

Proactive risk assessment involves a thorough analysis of potential security hazards and matching the right team to the unique needs of each event. Whether it's a large-scale parade like St. Patrick's or an outdoor concert, we ensure that sites are covered, support entry-point controls, and run our emergency response protocols.

Crowd management is another critical aspect of our security strategy. Our officers are effective hands and eyes for overseeing crowd dynamics. They help maintain order and prevent disturbances, all while ensuring a welcoming environment for visitors and guests.

Collaboration is also essential for strong security coverage. My staff are an important first line in the chain of command that leads to Savannah's greater law enforcement, and we ensure our security measures align with city ordinances and the needs of event organizers.

In partnership, we make sure we support local businesses and event organizers, fostering a community-centric approach to event security.

If you’re a business owner who needs to consider event security, remember to prioritize these main factors: The scalability of security measures to match your event size. How does your team include and work with security services to adapt and respond during complex situations?

You also need clear communication channels between all your people on the ground, security services, and your central office.

During the event, effective crowd management helps ensure the safety and enjoyment of your guests and the public.

Examples of effective crowd management strategies include:

  • Having designated entry and exit lanes to streamline movement and prevent congestion.
  • Putting up large, clear signage that guides people throughout the venue.
  • Setting up barricades and ground markers to direct movement and maintain order.

A good communication system is also crucial, as it helps maintain quick coordination and helps teams respond quickly when needed.

Deploying the right professionals and teams across the venue helps monitor the crowd and respond if an event or conflict crops up.

By focusing on these areas, you can ensure having an even better position and operation during your events and gatherings.

Together with SACG, we can ensure all of Savannah's events remain joyous, safe, secure and protected.
