Event Recap: Strengthening Bolivia's Tourism at Universidad Católica Boliviana

Bolivia is on the brink of a major opportunity. As Chinese tourism continues to expand globally, nations across Latin America are positioning themselves to welcome this dynamic market. On February 10, Universidad Católica Boliviana (UCB) in La Paz hosted a special talk on Chinese tourism, gathering over 70 students eager to learn about this evolving sector.

This event was made possible through the support of CABOTUR, Mercado Murillo Consulting Group, and Shake to Win, with the presence of Luis Ampuero Ramos, president of CABOTUR. We also extend a special thanks to Marco Murillo, our regional partner, for his support in making this event a success.


Bolivia & China: A Growing Relationship

Over the past two decades, China and Bolivia have significantly strengthened diplomatic and economic ties, laying the groundwork for deeper cultural and tourism exchanges. Trade between both nations has expanded rapidly, with China becoming Bolivia’s second-largest trading partner. As part of the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese investment in Bolivia has surged in infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing, opening the door for greater people-to-people exchanges.

Additionally, Bolivia became a Approved Destination Status (ADS) country for Chinese tourists in 2015, allowing Chinese travel agencies to promote group tours to Bolivia. While Chinese visitor numbers remain relatively low compared to other Latin American destinations, interest in unique, lesser-explored destinations is growing rapidly among Chinese travelers, who are seeking more than just conventional hotspots. Uyuni Salt Flats, Lake Titicaca, and Bolivia’s rich Andean heritage could be positioned as standout attractions for this market.
