I find myself compelled to share the extraordinary experience I had last night at the Blak Business Awards, an event radiating with Blak excellence.
First and foremost, congratulations to all the nominees, finalists, and winners of the 2023 Blak Business Awards!
The Northern Territory Indigenous Business Network (NTIBN) hosted this incredible gathering on Friday, August 11, 2023, and I must say, it was a night that I will never forget.
As the premier social event of the year, the Blak Business Awards showcased the undeniable success of Indigenous businesses in the Northern Territory.
The significance of this event cannot be overstated.
It was a powerful reminder that whether you're a start-up or an established company, Indigenous businesses deserve equal time in the spotlight.
These awards underscored the essential role that recognition and support play in carving out a unique space for Blak Businesses, enabling them to excel in their respective niches.
This evening served as a beautiful tribute to the entrepreneurial spirit thriving within the Blak community, thanks to our gracious hostess, Naomi Anstess .
One particular success story that caught my attention was that of AKJ Service , the winner of NT Blak Business of the Year 2022. Listening to its transformation from a team of 30 to a workforce exceeding 90 in less than a year was truly awe-inspiring. Jessie Risk , Owner and Managing Director of AKJ Services, is living proof that you can achieve it all: a young family, leadership with integrity, exceptional outcomes, and top-notch quality.?
AKJ Service's commitment to providing long-term opportunities and permanent positions reflects the profound impact Indigenous businesses can have on the community's socio-economic landscape.
The award emphasized that economic empowerment starts with Blak businesses.
This ethos permeated the awards ceremony, where finalists showcased their remarkable achievements, effectively dispelling any doubt that Aboriginal businesses can hold their own against any competition.
The event radiated a sense of unity and collaboration, a testament to the powerful idea that together, Blak Businesses and Allies can uplift one another and achieve remarkable feats.
One of the speeches that stood out for me was by the NTIBN CEO Jerome Cubillo : 'NTIBN has created a lighthouse model where everything NTIBN does is about purpose, impact, and how the Network can uplift generations to come.

It's Blak Businesses' time, it's Aboriginal people's time to demonstrate that Blak Businesses are legitimately going to close the gap in the country through the rise of a sophisticated and strong Blak Business industry across all sectors. Not just within niche culture, tourism, and art spaces, but also running multi-million dollar companies in construction, civil works, and beyond.'"
The Indigenous business community boasts diverse talents and contributions, as reflected in the award categories. Awards were presented for Best Blak Start-Up Business of the Year, Young Blak Entrepreneur, and Best Blak Construction and Resource Business.
Awards such as Best Blak Male and Female Leader of the Year inspired leaders.
NTIBN's dedication to promoting Aboriginal entrepreneurship was evident in categories such as Best Blak Tourism Business and Best Indigenous Bush Foods & Botanical Business of the Year. These awards underscored the importance of preserving and promoting Indigenous culture while contributing to economic growth.
I, J C Wanja Njue as an ally of NTIBN, I wholeheartedly support their mission to bolster Aboriginal businesses in the Northern Territory. Small, medium, and large businesses are included, as well as sole traders and micro businesses. Paul Kirby 's sentiment that supporting these businesses is "the right thing to do" resonates deeply, highlighting the moral imperative and potential for positive change.
The night culminated in the announcement of the winner of the NT Blak Business of the Year: House of Darwin , a prestigious accolade honoring exceptional Indigenous-owned businesses that have made a significant impact on the region, nationally, and globally. This award is a testament to the unwavering commitment of NTIBN and its allies to create an inclusive and equitable business environment that fosters Indigenous entrepreneurship nationally and globally. Notably, House of Darwin is expanding its reach, opening a new store in America, marking an exciting milestone in their journey.
Jerome Cubillo , a trailblazer at the helm of NTIBN, encapsulated the essence of the evening when he acknowledged Naomi Anstess 's transformative work. Naomi's dedication to purpose and impact was hailed as a driving force, a guiding light that empowers future generations and paves the way for their success.
In a world where economic opportunities can be limited for some communities, the Blak Business Awards stand as a resounding declaration that Blak businesses offer equal quality, value, and contribution to the economy, just like any other business.
NTIBN's unyielding dedication to propelling the Indigenous business sector to new heights is a testament to their belief in the power of economic empowerment and the change it can generate within Indigenous communities.
Another evening highlight was the inspiring encounter with Hakon of NTIBN, a prominent Indigenous Enterprise Consultant based in Darwin and the remarkable women of Tanyah Nasir Consulting Services . Through their Rise Up Program , this initiative empowers Aboriginal women, underscoring their strength and resilience for a lasting impact.
Driven by a fervent desire to effect change, especially in areas like employment, education, and lifelong learning, Tanyah is at the forefront. Barbara, a stalwart in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives, radiates enduring commitment as she nurtures her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Joanne, with a wealth of diverse experience spanning over three decades, stands as a formidable advocate within Indigenous sectors. Her achievements as an Aboriginal artist add a distinctive dimension.
The collaborative efforts of Tanyah, Barbara, Joanne, and Naya, an exceptional Graphic Designer, serve as a shining example of women's leadership, propelling positive change throughout Indigenous communities.
My night at the Blak Business Awards was nothing short of spectacular.
From the incredible welcome by the Larrikia Nation to the dance moves on the floor with the NTIBN Team, it was an evening of celebration, recognition, and unity. This event serves as a testament to the remarkable achievements of Indigenous businesses in the Northern Territory. As Indigenous businesses and allies continue to uplift one another, support each other's endeavors, and create a brighter future, I am reminded that the path to progress is paved by our collective efforts.
Together, we can redefine success on our own terms.
