Even Realities G1 - Becoming a Cyborg?

Even Realities G1 - Becoming a Cyborg?

There has been quite alot of interest for the Even Realities G1 smart glasses, so I decided to write a very quick review after having the glasses for three weeks. These are of course my personal opinions, you can find all sorts of other reviews online. For me it was clear that this is still quite new technology and therefore I didn't expect them to be perfect, still they are actually better than I expected. Also I've been happy to notice that there have already been some firmware updates during the time I've had them.

The main functionalities are: dashboard with time, weather and calendar (activated when you look up), voice controlled AI (Even AI), translation between 18 languages, navigation for walking and bicycling, teleprompter, emails and messages, notifications on incoming calls and quick notes based on voice recognition.

There are two touch control buttons at the end of both arms of the spectacles for e.g. starting AI and recording a quick note. With the glasses you get a dock for wireless charging. Battery lifetime is at least 24 hours, I believe. The waveguide displays are monochromatic. The glasses are connected to a mobile phone over bluetooth connection.

The design principle has been to develop glasses that remind normal eyeglasses and don't disturb the users. Therefore the displays are located on the upper half of the lenses and there are for example no cameras included. The overall build quality is very good and the Even Realities has definitely paid attention to details and usability also customer service was very fast to reply.

Personally I find the monochrome green display soothing and good enough for most use cases.

Ordering the glasses was fairly easy, I just went to optician got the required specs and typed them onto the website and got the glasses in about five weeks time.

Personally I've found the glasses most useful when I'm "on the go" and not infront of PC or tablet, for example when I'm walking and suddenly want to find information about certain topic. Also I've found the translation feature extremely useful, it is not perfect but at least I can understand the main point of the conversation. Translation quality depends very much on how clearly the spearker is speaking and how many speakers there are. Also several times I've had my phone in silent mode and luckily noticed a message about the incoming call on my glasses.

The biggest downside of the glasses is the weight, I'm personally used to frameless glasses that weigh only 14 grams whereas the G1 weighs 43 grams, I start to feel the difference after wearing the glasses all day. The slight discomfort after using all day might also be caused by the shape and size of the spectacle arms. As I've got used to frameless glasses I would also prefer the frame around the lenses to be thinner. For these reasons I've still been using my old eyeglasses mainly at home but for another person these may not be issues at all.

Regarding usability, it takes some time before you learn how to use the touch buttons. Even AI can answer to some wikipedia type questions, tell what's the weather tomorrow, how long does it take to walk from address a to address b, do calculus etc. but it's not as advanced as Chat GPT.

It was a pleasent surprise to notice that Even Realities invites developers to develop applications on their platform. I could imagine plenty of possible applications, e.g. seeing your sports tracker data, creating meeting minutes, seeing the locations of your family members, having a news feed, or for Wolt drivers to see their next order.

As a conclusion, I've been very satisified with my purchase considering the overall quality, features and price. I would say that the glasses are particularly useful to people that are "on the go" alot or to people that have relatives that don't speark your languages. This is definitely the future and already there are plenty of competitors like: Meta Bounds Mojie, LAWK Metalens, MyVu, INMO Go, and Oppo Air 2. I believe that in a few years time a large share of the eye glasses could be smart glasses with dispalys.

Thank you for this review

Thanks for the review! The hard part is when to invest in these, cause the development is so rapid. I wouldnt want to end up ordering outdated glasses.
