Even Gangsters Need Coaching!

Even Gangsters Need Coaching!

It’s a strange old world.

Ever since I graduated as a professional coach back in 2019, and subsequently set up my practice, perfectly timed just prior to the onset of Covid I must say, I have been searching for the ideal niche to work with. Learning and growing as you go, you try out some things, leave behind what isn’t working and keep what does.

However, it has only been recently that everything seemed to align perfectly in terms of who with, and how I want to work with people. And it happened totally by accident. I had previously done a bit of work with prisons, and inmates, as I know from personal experience that there is a huge gaping hole in the system, crying out to be filled by coaching.

Unfortunately, however I have found the current system to be quite set in its ways when it comes to the practices, interventions, and people they use, or work with. Often the system can seem to be closed book when it comes exploring the life changing benefits coaching has to offer both the staff who work in prisons, as well of course the inmates. Although times are slowly changing now. Lack of funding remains a big issue.

With my past and background, I have a natural connection with the type of individual who has lived a life, let’s say, on the wrong side of the law. I did so myself for many years. And this is one reason why prisoners felt comfortable and trusting when I have visited prisons to deliver my ‘Life in a Container – How to Stay Positive When Facing Adversity’ keynote talk. All too often the people presenting the coaching, offending behaviour programmes, or generally working within prisons, have little or no understanding or connection to the way of thinking these guys have.

And I have experienced it myself first hand.

When I was serving my sentence in prison, I took part in the alcohol programme, RAPT, at HMP Swaleside. One day a group of around twenty of us were sat down waiting for the facilitator to start the class. In walked a young guy in his late twenties. Clean-cut and well spoken, university educated, this guy instantly lost the respect of the group simply because of how he presented himself. Not his fault of course, however prisoners can be a funny bunch!

The knockout punch however was delivered when someone asked him what experience he had with addiction. After reeling off some qualifications, one of the guys interjected and said, ‘yes, but what have you ever been addicted to? Do you drink, smoke, or take drugs?’ The guy sheepishly said no.

‘But I have been addicted to chocolate!’. The class erupted into laughter.

The point here is that a certain type of man, or indeed woman, will only respond to someone who they feel has walked in their shoes. And that is the bizarre thing about my recent turn of events in terms in my ‘niche’ and who I want to, now, work with. I started getting private messages from people who are, let’s say, not the type you’d expect to be hiring coaches.

Because of my background however it seems these types of individuals have respect and trust in me. I have been working recently with several men who have been; ex-gangland enforcers, drug dealers, and the general alpha male, tough guy types, who in days gone by you would expect to ridicule people who use a coach. And perhaps they do still openly, whilst privately hiring one themselves.

Strange world indeed!

I might be wrong, but I don’t think there’s many coaches out there for gangsters and criminals, but it certainly seems to be the case that I am attracting them. I am joking of course, naturally I don’t only work with criminals, but there certainly seems to be an opportunity there to do so. And long may it be the case because part of my story is that it isn’t where you came from that counts… it’s where you are going!

And where you are going is my focus, and expertise… My job is to help you not only put in place the foundation that enables you to start building towards a future you desire, it is also to partner with you every step of the way as you create that new reality. Building success in life is no different from building a house. You wouldn’t build one without the correct foundations in place first. And your life is no different. For you to build a happy and successful life, in whatever it is you choose, firstly you want to have the mental foundation in place to build on.

And that’s where I come in!

This past week has seen me doing a lot of work behind the scenes on my new workshop. I will be starting work presenting this in person to two large organisations, a transportation company, and a housing association, over the coming weeks. Helping them to elevate the overall productivity of their staff to a level of performance which aligns with their vision.

On top of that, I have been focused on putting together, a new online workshop. Running over a five-day period, and due for release in late September. The workshop will aim to provide you with the knowledge, understanding, tools and techniques you need to consistently perform at a high level of energy and performance.

The future is bright, and very busy, so if you, or the organisation you represent are in a place where you feel you may benefit from learning a few new things from someone who’s own story highlights the immense transformational benefits of the work I do, both within myself and indeed with others, then get in touch.

Failing that, keep your eyes peeled for my new online workshop, and of course any gangsters you may know who need a life coach!!

Have a wonderful Bank Holiday Weekend…
