Will there even be an America?
This provocative statement produced by the Lincoln Project′s latest video “Mourning in America” speaks volumes about how even some Republicans have had enough with the White House Covid-19 management.
President Donald Trump also found an unusual foe in FOX News personality Sean Hannity’s attack on armed Michigan protesters against stay-at-home orders, branding long guns and storming inside the State Capitol rotunda.
There is another brand of thinking, though. Some conservative figures have begun to turn their rage on the scientists that have led governors across the US to lock down their activity in hopes of slowing the spread of the coronavirus. This anger is aimed at those perceived as elites and brings us back to the Tea Party Movement that took on former President Barack Obama and brought a conservative wave to Congress back in 2016.
Entry Michigan state Representative Beau LaFave, who, according to The Hill, referred to the protests as people frustrated by the idea that they don′t know what’s best for themselves, and by the Harvard-educated Ivy League public health experts brought in to tell them what to do, as if they will know better than you and your family.
Well, yes, they know better.
Not to say that they are better, as some protesters claim that the so call elites brand themselves. They know better because epidemiology is their craft. And, as shown in the Covid-19 newest projections, the spread around the US will only grow. Infections will double according to the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation. And this numbers will probably be also lower than reality as they rely on adequate testing and contact tracing, something that it’s not happening.
Some of those against the stay-at-home orders claim that they would rather die by the illness than starving facing an economic collapse. But will there even be an America if there are no healthy people to promote its economy and values?
Let the experts do their jobs. And then there will be time to vote on your conscience. That is, of course, if there′s an America left.
