Evangelizing geospatial, eggs (Spatial side up) & how to lie with maps

Welcome to Spatial Perspectives! Your monthly bite-sized newsletter for all things Spatial Data Science.

Getting everybody involved in geospatial

Location Intelligence holds a valuable, cross-disciplinary nature amongst industries such as telecoms , retail & transport . Spatial is a language that can be universally used as it encourages collaboration.?

To #geospatial experts, nothing is as exciting as a new data release or software upgrade. However, not everybody understands why geospatial is so valuable. Rather than being excited about geospatial tech or data, you will find that many of your colleagues and clients are more interested in what it means to the business (in new revenue or cost savings).

Our guide “How to get your colleagues & client excited about geospatial ” details how focusing on commercial & deliverable interests can best appeal to non-geospatial profiles and help you evangelize amongst colleagues & clients.

Data warehouses for spatial analysis

Scalable, serverless, cloud-native… These buzzwords are common when describing Data Warehouses. But why should users with more traditional infrastructure need to consider a more modern data stack?

Data Warehouses are built specifically for large scale data analytics. If you’re working with billions of data points, using the cloud is useful for low cost storage and efficient data visualization. This is particularly useful when working with spatial data - which tends to be bigger than non-spatial data - if your data warehouse supports geospatial functions; such as routing and spatial index aggregation.?

Meme of Boromir, Lord of the Rings, with the text "One does not simply visualize millions of points on a map"?

A recipe for the best brunch spot in London

February’s favorite find is Helen McKenzie 's investigation into where London could further fuel the brunch-obsessed desire of its growing population.

So, what’s the perfect recipe? A dash of data from Spatial.ai , SafeGraph & WorldPop , a heaping of H3 functions & a splash of Spatial Joins . Baked in CARTO and you have the ideal analysis for identifying new locations, enabling brunch deliveries and geomarketing strategies for targeted audiences.

The map below shows the brunch sweet-spots: areas with a high Total Addressable Market (TAM) but low number of brunch spots within 15-minutes of walking.

Tips to become a Spatial Data Scientist

Every edition we ask one of our Spatial Data Science Experts for their top tip on carving out your career as a Spatial Data Scientist. February 11th was International Day of Women & Girls in Science, as we celebrated the women across CARTO .?

Giulia Carella , Data Scientist, shares some advice for those aspiring for a career in Data Science.

Coffee break content

Fun fact: Coffee beans aren’t actually beans. They’re seeds that you can find inside “coffee cherries”; the fruits of coffee plants. Whether a bean or a seed, here’s some more coffee break content to start the day:

On the road!

As we’ve kickstarted the year, look forward to the upcoming events on the road and say hi to the team at CARTO:
